Summer Camp Beach Blast Day 1
As my children and I stood on the Norwegian Cruise Lines steps and watched the ship we were supposed to be on sail away with our luggage and friends still on board, I wondered what I could possibly write about everything that had just gone terribly wrong.
Promises made-both professionally and personally- had been broken.
Up to this point I had been the number one “cheerleader” of the Cheer Cruise and Summer Beach Camp Blast. Now that my children have stopped crying, although Becky* is still loudly “venting” more like a truck-driver than a cheerleader should. {*I don’t blame her because, although Becky was the coach at the Summer Beach Camp Blast who had the challenging job of being responsible for the safety of cheer campers ages 9 and under, and had spent the same amount of time coaching as any coach there, she didn’t receive anything that all the other coaches had received}.

Last day of beach camp in GK Elite Sports Bras
I promised myself and you that CHEERMaD would be authentic, autonomous and independent. As a professional reporter and as a voice for CHEERMaDs, it’s important to me that I maintain my credibility with honest, truthful writing.
Here’s what I can say.

Shaeli, 8, wrote how her Dad, Benjamin, was Certifiably CHEERMaD by travelling 7,000 miles from where he was stationed in Afghanistan to surprise her and attend her first competition last season.
CHEERMaD received a call from Kristina Parrish of It’s All About Cheer last fall about her new venture The Cheer Cruise and Beach Camp. I had been looking for a grand prize for the Certifiably CHEERMaD contest and this seemed to be a great fit.

Coaches Becky, Kayla and Jason
Kristina Parrish is a visionary. She put together a stellar group of coaches for the Summer Blast Beach Camp. According to Becky, every cheerleader who attended the camp learned a new skill and perfected many more. Kristina’s goal for athletes to have the opportunity to work with coaches of this caliber; ones they wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn from otherwise, was achieved.
In the first minutes of the camp, I watched Coach Domingo from Top Gun, and Coach Michelle from Georgia Heat size-up Millcreek Allstars‘ three stunt groups which were having a hard time keeping their flyers up in the air. After a few changes of hand positioning, by the end of the first session, two of the three groups had firm and steady stunts.

Coach Kyle and Coach Becky with campers
Not all the coaches; including Miami Elite and Stingrays, that signed on to participate in the camp attended. Those who did attend were amazing: Jason Graham and Becky Welsh, PRO Athletics–Leominster, Massachusetts; Ritch Ludke, Premier Athletics–Jacksonville, Florida; Kyle Gadke, Spirit FX–Chicago; Cory HinesTop Gun; Chris Swiderski, Georgia Heat All-Star Cheer; Derek R. Johnson, Full House AllStars– Massachusetts; and Kayla Steele, HotCheer AllStars–Pennsylvania. Also, Scott and Kathy Foster from Kristina’s daughter’s gym, RockStar Allstars conducted a parent’s roundtable.

Colors of Hope beach service
Even though Rachel also achieved a new skill and said she learned “a new way to do her layout,” Thursday’s Colors of Hope luminary party was the highlight of the week for me. A beautiful sunset to darkness service on the beach recognized each individual represented by a luminary. Even the smallest child stood silently and still while Kerry Augusto; a CHEERMaD from Bay State All Stars in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts who had led a luminary drive at her gym conducted the service. I felt an energy shift in the group when she read aloud the signs children held while standing in a large circle. The signs had words like “Love,” “Gratitude,” “Joy” and others that represented the values we believed to be the cheer community’s.
But there were problems at the Summer Cheer Beach Blast too. The Eden Roc cancelled the Pool Party, the Colors of Hope party and the ballroom where the Cheer Camp was to be held. In fact, I received a near hysterical call from one mom from our gym who had been the first to arrive and was told by the registration desk that “organizers of the cheer camp had cancelled.” It wasn’t cancelled, but the camp location had been changed from the Eden Roc to the Miami Beach Convention Center. As I understand it, two reasons were responsible for this:

Kristina, red dress, addressing parents concerns
Kristina was unable to work through the financial contract with the hotel. Basically, the camp attendance numbers were lower than needed to cover the cost of the ballroom and Kristina was unable to pay for the space by the week prior to the start of the camp, as required by her contract. She asked for more time but the Eden Roc refused, despite her longstanding relationship as an exclusive Marriott travel agent (Eden Roc is a Marriott property).
At the camp we were told that the spring-board floors wouldn’t fit into the freight elevators and that cancelled the use of the ballroom, which cancelled the use of the Pool Party and Colors of Hope party spaces. And with the cancellation of the Pool Party came the elimination of the only other potential income from the camp from alcohol served at the parties.
Like a Dominoes’ pattern where one block affects the next, which affects the next block, cancelling the ballroom also cancelled-out the pool and luminary party spaces as well as all the amenities like spa sessions and sibling activities.
Low numbers of attendees also meant low numbers of “comped” hotel rooms and cabins, which is what was promised to coaches and sponsors as compensation. Some of the coaches cancelled when they found out that their hotel rooms and cruise cabins wouldn’t be comped. The others arrived to find that instead of a private room, they would have roommates.
About a week ago, I was told that I’d have to choose between the cruise and our Eden Roc accommodations. Thinking I could commute between the camp and my mother’s home in Ft. Lauderdale, I chose the cruise. Just to make sure we had a cabin though, I booked one myself. According to NCL reservations the cruise was sold out and no more cabins for four were available but Orbitz did have cabins so I went through Orbitz.

Rachel at South Miami Beach
My back-up plan only prolonged the moment when my kids would find out that we wouldn’t be cruising.
CHEERMaD was attached to the Cheer Cruise and Summer Camp Beach Blast in many ways, especially because it was grand prize for the winners of the Certifiably CHEERMaD contest. Because of this I felt responsible that the camp and cruise go on in the best way possible. The Smith family added another hotel room and cabin to their prize so that the entire family six could attend. I had promised my kids a respite from all they’d endured this year as I worked 18-hour days on CHEERMaD, many of it on the phone with Kris planning and promoting the Cheer Cruise and Beach Summer Blast or whatever it was called. Our plane tickets were already purchased and my mom lived in Fort Lauderdale so I knew we would have a place to stay. I took a leap of faith that the net would appear.

Me, about an hour before I found out there was a problem with the cruise.
But unbeknownst to me, while I was immersed in the cheer camp in Florida, my bank in Massachusetts was trying to verify my cruise reservation as it was considered a suspicious purchase for me; both in amount and out-of-state and a possible security breach. No one was at home to receive the call(s) and no calls to my cell or email were made. Meanwhile, I was receiving email confirmations from Norwegian Cruise Lines that all was well, and would I like to purchase shore excursions, or better yet, another cruise. There were no emails from either NCL or Orbitz that there was a problem.
In hindsight, I too should have pulled out of the Cheer Cruise and Summer Camp Beach Blast when, pardon the pun, others were “abandoning ship.” But just like Millcreek’s third stunt group that never gave up and were rewarded on the last day of Cheer Bast Summer Camp with “Most Improved” honors, I didn’t give up.

Coaches and Sponsors
In reality, we qualified for three hotel rooms and cabins on the cruise: Becky’s cabin for coaching; CHEERMaD’s under its original agreement to be a media sponsor; and another CHEERMaD cabin for the ten families that booked either a hotel room or cruise through the CHEERMaD promotion. I had fulfilled everything I said I would do.
As a business move I understood why I was cut: if there was any hope for the camp, some coaches needed to attend.
At this point, I must thank my Pro Athletics families who attended the camp and the cruise because they believed me and in me. I LOVE PRO CHEERMaDs. They are crazy and outspoken but they are loyal and had my back. Except for two families of CHEERMaDs involved in the Colors of Hope luminary drive, the PRO families were the only ones who attended Colors of Hope. Since my original facebook post, and my revelation that we weren’t on the cruise I’ve felt the love and received support from many more people in the cheer community that I would have received, had everything worked out the way it was supposed to.

Rachel holding Certifiably CHEERMaD winner Shaeli Smith and Kristina's daughter Brooke holding Reagan Smith
At several moments last week, I tried reminding everyone that this was the first year of something that I believed, and still do believe, will become something great. I compared it to CHEERSPORT which began in a gymnasium with a dozen gyms and has grown into the largest competition at the biggest arena in the country.
But I would soon experience the same disenchantment.
That happened at noon Friday when I went online for our cabin number and was directed to a phone number. It was then, for the first time, that I was told that the reservation had been cancelled. After spending three hours on the phone with my bank, Orbitz and NCL we were directed to go to the port, that there was a cabin awaiting us. At the port, Kris stayed with me to help wade through the travel lingo and by 4 p.m. we were told that we were “cleared” to board.
This was the point when the roller coaster of emotions careened off track and a supervisor’s supervisor came out and informed us that our names were not on the final ship moniker that was sent to Washington to be approved by Homeland Security and without that security clearance, we were not allowed to board. Rachel was already on ship because her name was on the moniker in Kris’s room (too complicated to explain why).

Here shown Sister Becky with Rachel
Becky screamed “My sister is on that boat, get my little sister off!” and that’s when they called security…after hours of this she had no more patience, and I have to admit neither did I…a security supervisor boarded the ship and retrieved Rachel. Our luggage didn’t fare as well but thanks to help from Jason and Melissa Hay from CheerXm1.com our bags are being delivered to Fort Lauderdale.
We were asked to leave the building as this was the ship to set sail and everyone’s shift at NCL was over. That’s when we were escorted by Miami Dade police out to the steps outside the terminal to wait for my stepfather to come get us.
There before us was the Norwegian Sky just beginning to pull away from dock. My three kids and I watched in silence as it slowly sailed down the canal before loudly tooting upon entering the open sea.

Becky, Rachel and John
As much of a positive thinker and optimistic believer in miracles as I am, there was nothing I could do. That’s hard for any CHEERMaD: I’ve seen them in-action at practices, competitions and at last week’s camp. We support our kids with our time, our money and all of our resources. Whether it’s for a free bow, an expected camp sports bra or a cruise, CHEERMaDs will go to the ends of the earth for their kids, or as far as homeland security will let them.

Lisa, this is so sad. I really hope everyone reads this to learn about the kind of business practices that you suffered from.

I can't believe the people that paid to attend weren't in revolt as well with all of the activities and coaches that weren't available as promised.

And while I can't completely blame them based on the ending, I would be curious as to why the Miami Elite & Stingrays coaches didn't show.

Such a promising event ending badly, though it's unfortunately not 100% surprising.

Ditto everything that Bill said. I can't say I'm surprised either.

But my heart breaks for you and your family!!! I'm so sorry this happened to you!!!

I was the coach from Stingrays signed up but I was never able to make a firm commitment because of my new job. Over a month ago I informed everyone I was not able to attend because I had to attend a Joe Paterno class at Tech (but not before I was announced or any money was spent on my travel or room, I had never given out any of my credentials to be signed up). Possibly in the heat of the moment things can get forgotten, but a Stingrays coach was never published that they were officially coming. Sorry for the confusion but I do hope to attend and work future cruises.

Thanks King. After reading Lisa's account, I don't see why anyone would want to do this in the future.

Seriously... What a mess! My heart goes out to you and your kids.
I have said it over and over, but I don't understand why cheerleading is such a breeding ground for horrible business practices and people let it continue on... If you cannot deliver on your promises, you should not be in business. I cannot imagine that they did not see this coming when registrations were not pouring in... Save people the time, money, and disappointment. You have ruined any chance of someone putting on something similar and doing it properly.
It just seems as though everyone sees how involved cheerleading parents are and views it as a way to make easy money, yet very few cheer businesses are honest, fair, and doing it correctly.

I hope Kristina will come on here and give the other side to this situation because there are ALWAYS two sides. I don't know many of the details about the camp/cruise but I do know Kristina as I've been friends with her for 8 years through cheer.

Of all the cheer parents I've met she is the most kind, honest, and compassionate person I know. Any time I spoke with her to see how her planning was going she always said "Susan I don't care if I make any money on this, I just want the kids and most importantly the parents to have a place to go and be around other parents in cheer." She even left some of her own family at home to make room for other people to be able to attend for free.

Kristina was also responsible for the Cheer Expo at Worlds as well and she said her only goal was to break even on the event (and I'm not sure she even did that) while many of the other vendors there were able to make profits.

Sounds like there were some issues with the camp/cruise and I hope she learns from them for the following years, but I had to speak up when posters were describing her as dishonest or otherwise.

I really admire that she wants to do these things for the kids and families, but there is something that rubs me the wrong way about promising things and not delivering. We attended the Cheer Expo at Worlds, and myself and the group I was with were very disappointed. There were supposed to be free t-shirts for those that registered in advance, which we never got. We asked around, nobody could help us. Finally we were told they were being shipped to us, which they never were. There were very few vendors, and parking cost us $16. I paid $16 to spend less than 10 minutes looking at vendors. I think it has the potential to be a big event, but it was such a disappointment the first time around that many people will not give it a second chance, and I think it will be the same situation for the cruise. I want to believe that these people have the best intentions, but it's really hard to separate the personal and business side of things. Even the most kind-hearted people are not always the best business people.

Again I'll let Kristina respond because there are some inaccuracies to the article, specifically of which is that Lisa and many of the others were notified of changes months before the event, not the week before.

I would like to give a positive comment about the event.

Despite some hiccups along the way, this was such a GREAT learning experience for the kids and coaches. I know personally, I gained a lot of knowledge out of it, along with sharing some of my own. Not only with just the athletes, but the coaches. Most 'Coaches Conferences" you don't spend much time with the same people. I was around the same coaches the entire trip and we exchanged friendships, knowledge and was a great opportunity to have a "break" on the cruise from the normal cheer schedule. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the kids and I saw improvement from EVERYONE!!!!

There were several problems along the way, yes. I don't blame anyone for feeling they didnt get what was promised. I don't exactly know what that was, as I was a coach and not a paying customer - but that seemed to be the general complaint. I can tell you, I had a horrible cruise experience and it was not anyones fault but bad luck. They lost my luggage for a solid 24 hours, my room keys wouldn't work for a solid 12 hours after being on board, Bank of America shut my card down for fraudulent activity, so I was essentially moneyless half of the trip. My bunking mate had expensive things stolen from his bag. However, despite all odds, I did my best to turn lemons into lemonade. Yes, I was frustrated but I used the time for networking, sitting amoung great company, and relaxing.

I do understand people paid a lot of money, and deserve to be upset, but situations are what you make of them. Im sure anything that was put in writing, etc. will be handled properly.

As someone said, I have known Kristina for a little over two years. Ive had nothing but kind words to say about her. She is JUST a cheer mom and this is her concept that she believes in. I also believe in it, as did most of the coaches that attended. As one of the coaches said at the end of the camp - This idea is a seed that is planted. There were problems, several problems. All that can be righted by next year.

Each to their own, but I will be attending any future events held by Kristina that my schedule will allow because the concept is great and I think its a great luxury expense that will be fun for the athletes and parents.

Lisa - It was GREAT meeting you this weekend along with your daughter. I was SOOOO upset for you that there were complications getting on the cruise. I, along with the coaches noticed your hard work and help during beach camp keeping things organized. It was not unappreciated and sorry I didnt get the chance to tell you that in person. I can stand by your blog that your blog post is fairly accurate in your experience (at least the details I know of) but I also stand by Kristina that I believe she will make it right, and that for the future she will be opening up to allowing people to help her.

I encourage anyone to give the Cheer Cruise a chance, esp with talks of what we discussed this weekend about how to improve and market it. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to PM me.

About the Expo.... Varsity/USASF did EVERYTHING to try to get this shut down and scare Kristina. IDK anything about the Expo or promises made - Just wanted to say that she had a lot of un-needed last minute drama strictly dealing with Varsity/USASF.

Also, a side note - Sometime vendors are shady and back out last minute. Just how the industry works.

Am I reading this right? The reason that you were unable to attend the cruise stemmed from a communication problem between yourself and your bank, correct? While I'm sorry that things didn't go as planned and that there were many unexpected changes, I don't understand how that particular part had anything to do with the organizers, which is the inference that I'm getting. Sorry if I misread that.
I know that an inaugural event often has many problems and I hope that this is a learning experience for all involved. This is a wonderful idea and I hope that it is attempted again with more success.

Never mind..ignore my prior post. I completely misread that part if the article (after rereading it in peace and not in my phone). That wasn't what you were insinuating at all.

She had to book a room on her own after her comped room fell through from the organizer. Had her comped room been provided, as promised, there would have been no need for her to go through Orbitz to book a room at her own expense (causing the alert by her bank).

I would like to chime in as someone who actually attended this event as nothing more than a cheer mom. I asked my family about the experience at breakfast this morning and they gave it a 9/10, stating he only downfall was that it was a little too hot at Great Stirrup Cay! My children are level 4 and 5 cheerleaders Who regularly attend Camp Woodward in PA, and have had experience with some fantastic coaches from all acros the country. They loved their experiences at Beach Camp, and though they didn't walk away with new skills in two days, they both felt they got tips to strengthen their form. The biggest problem with beach camp was that the hotel was simply not family friendly and the camp tried to be overly accommodating to everyone. The Eden Roc was gorgeous-- perhaps too gorgeous. The staff did not seem ready for groups of children and it seemed that every time Kristina tried to plan an event the hotel balked. She did the best she could, arranged a free shuttle for all the kids and parents to a space less than 2 miles away, and made it work. It was no big deal. And for my kids, the shuttle was just another chance to meet new people. Kristina tried to organize events: pyramid on the beach, photo shoot, pool party, but it seemed there was a core group of families who wanted to be unhappy and refused to show up for anything. This undermined the program. As far as the cruise went, we did not know about the events cited here until much later. What we knew was that we were given an upgraded room by Kristinas organization so we were on a higher deck with a window, our excursions were awesome, and our kids
