Especially in back walkovers, bridges, etc. Well, I have a ganglion cyst in my wrist, and it puts me back in tumbling a lot. It won't go away, we have tried everything, and it just comes back. It doesn't allow me to put pressure/bend my wrist as much as most people. Has anyone had experience with one and how did you get it to be normal? Any tumbling technique to make it stop hurting?

I have them, they can get pretty annoying. They arent so bad on the spring floor.. and the mat isnt TOO bad, but they hurt a lot when I tumble on the court. There's not a lot you can do. You can get surgery, but a lot of times they will come back. I just try to push them back down and do wrist strengthening excercises and stretches.

athletic tape doesnt do anything so dont even try that.
mine hurt from the years of gymnastics and so on. i think you should have a dr look at it. or maybe get physical therapy for it?

You should definitely see a doctor about trying to have the cyst aspirated. Ganglion cysts can be caused by the fluid that lubricates the tendon or ligament leaking into open space, you often see it with tendonitis.

Go to a doctor for sure. If you do start using braces, don't depend on them. Only use them for a short period of them. Every practice and every game I would put my wrist brace on and it really didn't help me in the long run. It only makes whatever you're bracing weaker.

I had my cyst on my wrist removed in 08 because I was having severe problems when it came to tumbling. Afterwards I couldn't even do a cartwheel or handstand for about 3 months. The recovery is what kills you. I'm glad I did the surgery but be warned if you do it, you will lose time and strength in recovery.
Plus your wrist is like so small and white afterwards its funny looking :p

Oh and even though its been like 4 years
if you're stretching your wrists where the palm of your hand is facing upwards and you try to bend, I still have to put my body over my arms because of the scar.
But i'm not sure if thats from the surgery or the coalition in my wrist.
Just thought i'd tell you so you can weigh all your options ! Good luck !

my friend had that and she had to get surgery. it might take you out for awhile but it will probably help in the long run

I don't know much about cysts. But I can give you a few tip that might help ease the pain from tumbling. For sure see a doctor and possibly a sports medicine specialist to ensure that no complications arise from tumbling with a cyst.

In general I notice a lot of people who complain of wrist pain have what I like to call "short tumbling." They are usually more flexible in their lower back or just have improper technique. Their handspring are high, their handstand seem to jump to the ground, and back walkovers seems like they could be done using only a quarter of a panel.

This up-and-down motion of tumbling puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the wrists and can cause overuse injuries such as sprains, strains, and ever fracture if not corrected. By lengthening your tumbling, force is transfered more slowly and the trauma to the wrist is lessened.

I know that your source of pain is a cyst, not the pounding from tumbling on the wrist joint, but by lengthening your skills such as the reach into your roundoff, and your back handspring, the more careful weight transfer might reduce the pain. With a combination of adjusting technique, strengthening of your forearm, and working with a qualified physician who can recommend other treatments, your main can be minimized and hopefully no longer affect your tumbling.
