I can't remember which thread it was being discussed on, but several people mentioned baseline testing being completed on their athletes or at the local high schools. Does anyone have any info on this? Do you need to go through a company, or is it something we can do? Was there a cost and if so, how did you pay for it? I think it would be a great thing to look into for our athletes. Thanks

I looked up "Impact Concussion Test" and filled out the online form I believe and they set up an appointment for me at a local children's hospital. It was $25 and they did the test right there on the computer and emailed me the results (which I always keep on my phone) and they also keep a record in their files. This way if we ever have to head to the emergency room I have the baseline test with me at all times.

are you a parent or a gym? as @driverto6 said as a parent you can contact them and find the nearest administrator of the test if your child is 10+. As a gym, you can purchase the software and pay per athlete (cost per tests decreases the more kids you test)

Sorry for the post and run. I'm a teacher/coach, so I'm looking at this for our student athletes in all sports potentially.

Thanks @njallday, I can look into that to start

We weren't charged. I believe it was done by the school nurse.

They're done by the athletic trainers at the schools around here. It's now required with the physical.

They're done by the AT at the school I work/coach at also. Kids don't have to pay separately for them. All athletes do the impact ones linked to above after tryouts are complete. And AT and coaches have to follow through w all follow up procedures following a concussion. Our ATs have always been trained in this, so I'm not sure if you have to pay to be trained to administer the baselines or what not. They have been very helpful though, I highly suggest looking into it!

Our state requires EVERY high school athlete to have a baseline and it is done at our schools. That said there are many fine local medical groups that do them. In our area we have 1 of the 5 in the nation that do baseline testing for children under 10. All of my kids have baselines and it was the most important tool in my one daughter's recovery, A good program usually has a parent component as well. I am linking our local one because it even has the Virginia law about concussions. if it didn't work here is the web page:
FFPC3- FFPC3's Online Concussion Education Designed for Youth Sports Programs Using Public School Property

The school I coach at requires every helmet contact sport to take IMPACT, I make my teams do it as well because I view cheer as contact (stunting). Our athletic trainer does it, and it is free for all athletes.

Anyone from Canada did this? I don't know how it would work here...

What exactly is baseline testing?
It's a cognitive function test. It tests things like memory, reaction time, etc. So athletes usually take the test at the beginning of the season to get their baseline, then if they get a head injury and show signs of a concussion they take the test again to see how their cognition compares.

For the kids doing it - it is basically like computer games. If a concussion occurs they will use the same test multiple times throughout the recovery to see how it is going. During that recovery time besides rest, many athletes are encourage to get some cardio in (power walking - mine hated it), and some centers use excercises involving vision and balance (mine was not to fond of it). But have to say having a baseline is HUGE because without that starting point the really can not measure adequately how much damage occurred and what connections need to be worked on- some measure can be done but not all. It is like a seat belt for an athlete you never hope to use it but when you have it and need it - so worth it.
