Tomorrow I'll be sending 2 of my kids off to compete out of area for a bid. Because the competition is so far away, my wife and I won't be able to attend. This usually isn't a problem but the entire household has come down with the flu. (Sore throats, fevers, fatigue, muscle aches, puking, nausea, etc.) We really don't want to send them away when they're feeling so poorly, but we don't want to damage the teams chances...thanks so much!

Does anyone have any tried and trusted ways to keep them on their feet for the duration of their travels?

edit: Two, not three...I think I may be too tired for the internet today.

Is it a competition that involves flights? That is the worst for stomach illnesses. Kids are amazingly resilient and can manage to compete no matter how sick they are. Tell them to get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. Other than that there isn't much else you can do. Whoever is taking care of them this trip deserves a gift card!

Granted, it wasn't flu, but I had to send one 10 hours drive away sick as a dog. I texted her when she needed to take meds and checked in often.
Give the team parent and coaches fair warning and God bless whichever parent is caring for them this weekend!!

@quitthedrama No, they'll be taking a bus. It's supposed to be 7 - 10 hours, depending on the weather conditions.
Gift cards, thank-you notes and baked goods! :chestbump: I just hope nobody else gets sick, and they can run a safe, clean routine this weekend!

eek. lots of blankets and pillows. snuggle them together on the bus and give them something to sleep for those 7 hours. pack extra hand sanitizers/lysol wipes to keep everything clean and as germ free as possible. the other parents will appreciate you(or your CP's) making an effort not to spread to everyone (i've seen some kids practice with those face masks. not sure how helpful it really is, but when they're all confined to a small area with no air circulation - like a bus - they may not be a bad idea for CPs either.) pack lots and lots of tissues, couch drops, throat spray, and maybe a bucket. make sure coach is aware and makes tweaks to the routine as necessary (and the kids aren't afraid to speak up if they truly feel they can't do something. muscle aches and fatigue could end up putting their own/others safety at risk.)

comp day - if they're taking anything to alleviate symptoms, make sure you wake them up early enough to take meds so they have time to kick in before warm ups. if they have a long day, bring those blankets and pillows to the convention center and hope they can curl up somewhere to rest during down time. if they can eat - their body will need protein to replenish what the flu stole from them and get them through the routine or get them some pedialyte or something similar if they can't keep food down. pack broth, crackers, bananas.

and maybe make sure coach/team mom has a bucket backstage. you don't want to be the kid who pukes on the mat.

here's hoping they're feeling much better this weekend! (and the rest of your family members at home!)

Call their docs and get them scrips for TAMIFLU(cuts down on sick time by 30%) before they go, and plenty of fluids/PEDIALYTE to keep their electrolyte balances up and maintain hydration.

Tamiflu is in short supply and is often reserved for high risk patients. It is also only given in documented flu positive persons who have only begun having symptoms within the past 48 hours.

How did it go?

It was a hot mess. The competition changed the schedule last minute. One of the kids didn't make it in time to compete, CP2 didn't throw his full and another athlete was pulled because she had to compete right afterwards for an int. bid. On the bright side, my babies are both home safe and back in bed. (Feeling a little better, no more fever or puking!) :)
