How many gyms have videos and projectors for athletes to watch themselves? Are they used all the time or only on "special practices"? Do you think they are beneficial?

I coach high school, but we do it all the time in our practices. We have a TV set up in the gym and we record most of our full out run throughs and then watch it while the girls catch their breath. They love it because they can actually see the big picture and what needs to be worked on. Sometimes we watch it once and tell everyone to focus on the whole performance (timing, spacing, sharpness of the group) and then again and focus on yourself through the whole routine (what can you work on for next time?)

As a coach, I can only tell them to fix something so many times. When they actually see it on video they can actually see what we're referring too and work on it.

my gym does that. they have one on the wall and they can reply our full out routines... & they also have this portable cart to bring around the gym and an athlete/coach can play it in slow motion, rewind, fastforward, etc.. i think its very helpful! i get to see what I am doing wrong, and see the improvement myself. plus I am a very visual person

I think this is a great idea. We never did this when I cheered, but I think this would be really helpful. I have sort of a "cheer blackout" whenever doing the routine full out. I have little to no recollection of what happened on the mat so it would have been really nice to be able to see where I had messed up or lost my momentum during the routine.

After each competition we do this, while going over score sheets. Sometimes words on paper dont provide enough detail but when you watch it also it helps alot. Once in a while they will video tape us doing jumps or a certain stunt group thats having problems, that way you are able to view what the judges see.

Sort of related question...

I know many EPs don't allow video recording. Does this apply to say a coach who wants a video copy to review with the team after a comp? I would imagine it would be beneficial to review with a scoresheet.

What kind of camera do you use that allows you to watch slow motion. I think that would be so beneficial.

its called the TiVo video training for athletes I believe. There is a remote, and the coaches can just play everything with a delay (10 seconds, a minute, 5 minutes, etc.), and then with a remote they can rewind and play in slow motion and fast forward back to where you are.

my coaches usually have the TV screen off unless if we are watching it though, because it can be a distraction to watch yourself dance. :)

I remember the first time one of the girls went to nationals and saw herself on the screen when she turned around. It freaked her out

I have a parent that usually records our competitions and puts it in a DVD for me. I will bring a laptop and we will send a few girls at a time to watch the routine. Once, they are supposed to watch THEMSELF only. See what they did, what was good, what can be improved. The second time, they watch everything else (NOT themself).

Sometimes, I'll have them watch a competitor that scored better and then ask them what they saw the other team had that we didn't. How many times can I tell them about "energy" "selling the routine", etc but when they see another team out perform them, they get it!

At the gym we practice at (it's a gymnastics facility, we just use it) there's a TV screen mounted on the wall behind the floor with a replay at 15-ish seconds delay. It stays on (we don't know how to turn it off) but our kids don't watch it or use it at all because the camera is at such a weird angle it's hard to see anything that happens on the floor. It would be cool if it was actually useful though.

We have a fixed camera set on the back wall about 50 ft from the main mat and mounted high. It records everything onto a hard drive . The coaches then can play the practices/routines back in slow motion, normal speed...whichever on the big screen in the gym. AND that camera also streams live to the big screen in the lobby so parents always get a "judges eye view". Some coaches use it every practice, so a little less but its a great training tool to have.

Love this idea!!! Especially for the parents getting that 'live view' :)

Our works the same way, so I wonder if it's the same. Very helpful tool to have and when our upstairs viewing area is crowded, us team moms can go into the office and watch practice from the TV in there!!
