For the past 3 years with my cp in all stars, the Grand Champion of the competition has always been the team with the highest score, which basically meant the only eligible teams were level 5 (or 6 if they had them). But this season we were at a competition who crowned the Grand Champ by highest percentage of possible score for that level. Well, this was very exciting because my CP's Y2 team won Grand Champ! it was very exciting for us, but made me wonder..

Why don't other EP's do it this way?

Which way do YOU think it should be calculated highest score or highest percentage?

Most of the comps we went to this season did it by session, not level. Minis in one session, youth in another and so on. Unfortunately, it still turns out to be the highest leveled team in each session, but not always.

highest calculated score is not fair because obviously the highest levels are going to score the highest.
i like the percentage value, because it should be how well the team performs their own routine.
I like that they rewarded your team because they performed their routine better than the level 5's performed theirs!
congrats!

I actually like this! Its pretty obvious that the grand champ of ALL will always be a high level team, so to see another level recognized for their ability in that level is fantastic!

What a great experience for the team!

we've had this too, but they usually called it high point, with a grand champ at the end. so like in all of level 1 there was a highest scorer, and so on...but then at the end, the highest of all of those (obviously the level 5+ team) was also named Grand Champ. i know some comps do it as grand champ with each level. i've never seen it done by age group, though.
This comp (which was a small Texas Cheerleader Magazine competition) did high point for all levels, too the same way, then the Grand Champ was as a percentage. so, we didn't know who was going to be called (unlike the other way..LOL) and we were not expecting it to be our girls!

i've been at at comps that do it every way, by level, age group, or session. doesn't always end up being the highest level depending upon how the score sheets done. some score sheets a tiny 1 can score the same as a open 6. When its done by level, i love to see the minis win though :) it made me feel happy to have my mini 2 get grand twice this year. we beat the senior 2s from our own gym both times, but it was because the scoresheets heavily favored squad tumbling which we had 19 of 20 doing bwalkover bhs and powerhurdle roff bhs.

The EP I work for's scoring system is set up so that any team at any level could win grand champs. You can get a perfect 10 as a mini 1 team if you completely max out level 1, or you could get a perfect 10 at level 5 if you completely max out level 5. It's not uncommon at all to see a lower level beat out a higher level team for grand champs. Last year at our competition with Worlds bids, a Youth 2 team was the high point champion.

most comps i go to have a grand champ for every level- so the level 1 grand champ can be anyone from a tiny 1 to a senior 1, and so on

Well, I like the fact that it gives all levels a chance to win. Specifically last weekend at Jamfest .. our team didn't win Grand, BUT certainly had a chance. The team that won was a Sr. 5 team and hit a great routine. So naturally, they should have won. However, if that Sr. 5 team had made several errors, but still scored higher than our Sr 4 team, then it would have been reasonable if our team would have won. Not necessarily high score, but high score PLUS a clean routine. By the way, the team that won, United Talent.. Great job from Level 4 and 5 teams both. Solid routines and stunts.

I've seen everything from grand champs by age group, grand champs for each level (which is what I think they do at Cheersport), grand champs for an entire comp. At UPA they have an entirely separate round for grand champs.

a few years ago when I was on a senior 3 team, the level 5 team fell and we beat them out for grand champion at a competition and they were MAD.

Congrats! But hmm I usually see competitions do it either by session, or by skill level (grand champ of level 2, grand champ of level 3, so on)

most of the competitions my gym goes to...or at least most of the local competitions, do level grand champs...and then an overall grand champ...i like that concept.
