We’re trying our hand at GD this year and now I’m realising a bit too late the logistical nightmares that come with it.
First, how do you fly with megaphones? Obviously they’re not carry-on material. I’m guessing you just check them and hope the airline doesn’t lose them. We already check our flags and banner, but they’re already so ungainly to drag through an airport that I was curious if someone has another way. A friend suggested FedExing them over beforehand and just picking them up when we’re ready, but that’s another errand I’m not sure I want to deal with in a packed weekend. So far my instincts tell me don’t bother. Along with our flags and banner, we have signs and poms as well. It’s not like we NEED them for props points. But my stepdad’s voice is telling me: “Why did you buy them if you’re just going to leave them at home?” So, yeah.
Secondly, is GD just a one shot deal or does it have prelims, semis, etc.? I’ve never really paid attention to the GD schedule so I don’t know how these things shake out...if someone has a link to last year’s, that’d be so helpful.
Also, I’m assuming that, if my team is successful, then one of our show cheer performances will fall on the same day as a GD performance. If so, what are the odds of having time for a uniform change? The girls want to wear their new sideline sweaters for GD, but if we’re as stressed as I’m assuming we will be I don’t think they’ll have the energy or the interest when the time comes.
OH and one more thing: is college band music allowed? Or does that fall under the same copyright rules that all the other music does? I was sort of hoping they fall under public domain, but I’m wary. We have our low-rent fight song that we qualified with, but I know that a lot of teams adopt the Notre Dame song as their “own” fight song during games when nobody cares where the music comes from. I’m wondering if that could translate to GD. The rules say you’re supposed to use your school’s fight song, but if your school adopted another school’s fight song, will it still be allowed? So basically if we can use college band music, I’d love to use USC’s. But USC’s song is so great that I’m guessing if no one else has used it yet, then there’s probably a reason why.
But seriously tell me this wouldn’t be so cute (starting at 1:31)
Thanks everyone. You’re the best.
