All-Star How Much Notice Do You Expect

On the flip side, how do you feel when your gym pulls out of a competition on short notice? We were to travel about two hours out of town to compete, as per the schedule we received last June. However, a few weeks ago the gym emailed everyone to say we wouldn't be going. Not because of injuries, a change in venue, anything like that. It was because it's spring break here, and too many families said they couldn't go. I'm a little disappointed we're not going, but I'm more irritated because people knew about the date for this comp months ago, yet still chose to make vacation plans for the same date...whereas other people skipped spring break plans to attend the comp.

Yes, that would tick me off too. I skipped our family vacation this year due to the cheer schedule. It comes out in early December-- if you can't at least give notice a month ahead that there are extreme reasons why you can't attend, you should be expected to attend all comps. As far as extreme reasons with advance notice, I consider that family wedding, other religious ceremony, something of that magnitude. I realize that there are circumstances where people get really ill, there's a death in the family, etc. but that shouldn't require canceling a comp as it would just be one person.

We were sent an email asking us to respond if we can't attend this weekend. I got it on Tuesday and replied right away that we were OK to attend. No reply as of yet.

It's not unusual to email and never get a reply. We usually get out comp day report times on Wednesday, so we're all used to that routine. And I'm OK with that. But overall, the lack of communication with this program is frustrating.

Yea that whomps :/

We do our schedule early and give it out at the first parent meeting in June. We never change it. So our parents know way in advance. We only had one change in my many years coaching. One comp got cancelled a few years back because of a major snow storm shutting the state down.

I'm surprised other gyms get away with doing anything less than this. Good for you!

I'm all about my kid being 100% committed to whatever she signs up for but I want to know the expectations BEFORE she signs up so that I can guarantee it can be done. Having been in the cheer world awhile and now involved in other sports it blows me away how much parents will tolerate from some gyms.

Trust me, the tolerance is wearing thin

I would need at least a month notice of a competition. Being in grade 12 I have a part time job and I need to give them my request a month in advance. I usually work Friday Saturday and Sunday so there is no way I could get to a short notice competition. Thankfully my gym has always stuck with our competition schedule that is put out as tentative with the registration package in March, and made final by June. This year was the first time they have added a competition in last minute and it was for our youth 5 team. They were supposed to attend Jamfest Super Nationals in Indy but after the schedule came out and showed they were the only y5 team competing there, they decided not to go last minute and instead go to athletic championship in providence 2 weeks later, where they would be one of 3 teams competing in y5. I understand why they made the change but from what I heard, many parents were displeased.

Well, just got word that due to "numerous schedule conflicts" (surprise, surprise) we will not be competing this weekend. But... they want to add a competition on 3/22. A whole 10 days notice. And we already compete 3/21. Both comps are local, but seriously, just credit us for the missed comp and quit messing with the schedule.

I don't like the practice of adding competitions but I know sometimes it happens, especially when you attend small comps that sometimes get canceled. Last season my sister cheered for a small gym. They had a small one day get canceled and picked up a new one about a month out. It wasn't that bad, given that it was only a one day and less travel than the initial competition. And there was a fair amount of warning.

I don't think her current gym would do that. They did have a list of three or four tentative competitions that could potentially be added for any team. Those dates were given on the initial competition schedule in September, and none have actually been added.

I would LOVE this. We "discuss" the comp schedule at registration, but the "final" schedule doesn't usually come out until late July/August. This year we have had changes to that original final schedule that I believe should have been discussed with the parents prior to the adjustment.

I think the only instance I've ever been in this situation was the inaugural Summit in 2013..my team got our bid at literally the last bid competition, only about 2 weeks or so before the comp. Luckily if something is on the schedule, tentative or not, my mom books whatever flights and hotels we may need in August. Literally August. We know we can cancel if we don't end up going, but we have it just in case we need it..
But our gym would not go unless we have 100% "yes" votes from all the parents on the team. And we did, so we went. But several days before...nope. I guess it's good that it was local, but honestly..local comps here STINK. So our parents would've been mad to add something that fast that wouldn't amount to anything besides floor time, honestly.
