I am 14 years old and I recently got hooked on cheerleading, I was watching some of my friends do it and thought it was very interesting. I looked into it and found out about all-star cheer and instantly wanted to do it. I am not that flexible, but I am trying to become better. I weigh around 90 lbs (I haven't checked my weight in while, for my family doesn't own a scale) and I'm 5' 1'' and skinny as a twig. I can't do any tumbling and I can barely even do a bridge... I don't know if I am good enough to become a cheerleader. I really want to become a cheerleader but I feel like I wouldn't be any good and that I am too old to start...

Allstar cheer has levels ranging from 1-6. One being beginner & 5/6 being advanced. There is definitely a place for you :)

Are your friends into all safe cheer? If they are I'm sure they can tell you really what it really is like and confirm their will be a place for you.

What city/state are you from? There should be someone on here who can recommend nearby gyms for you to check out that would accommodate your needs. By the way, there is no such thing as too late to start :) Even if you didn't commit to joining a team immediately, you could always take tumbling/conditioning/stunting/stretching classes or privates to help you get a feel for it!

This season has already started, so it would be a good idea if you found a gym near you soon so you could start taking tumbling classes and getting to know some people/future teamates. Then you will be ready for tryouts (they usually happen April or May.) Here is a list of almost all of the all star cheer gyms in the US by state: http://board.fierce-brands.com/wiki/cheer-gyms/ If you aren't in the US there is an international list as well: International Gym List | Fierce Board - The Voice Of Cheer And do not worry about starting too late. I am 14 and this is my first year. I started last summer at 13 with basically just a bridge and a cartwheel. I started working on back handsprings and it was so hard, because I was super weak back then. There were soo many times I just wanted to quit (wasn't on a team) because needing to do back handsprings with a spot after a long time started to get old while everyone else was moving on to harder skills. But as soon as I got it, (gained muscle, learned better technique, etc.) I got a whole bunch of skills a lot quicker. That means if you really want to get a lot of tumbling & be on a higher level team, start working out, running (strong legs are really helpful,) do ab workouts, and do a lot of arm strengthening. So when you start, you will have an easier time in the beginning.. I wish I knew that when I started. Anyways, I just got my standing tuck a few days ago and it has been exactly a year since I started! Don't give up and good luck on finding a gym! I hope it works out and you have fun in the all star cheer world! :)

Not sure where you are but if there is a gym near you that offers all star prep, you should check it out. That is a good place to start if you are interested in all star.

Thank you all, for your encouragement! I am thinking of doing some tumbling and cheer lessons or classes. I found a gym near by where I live that has also just started up and All-Star Cheer program. I think I will try out for them next season or when ever they have an opening on the team I want to be on! Thank you so much!

I started when I was 16, so it's not too late. Look into summer camps at you local gyms to give yourself a taste. Contact the gym you've just found. They may have space already. Otherwise see if they offer tumbling classes, stretch classes, flyer classes, etc., anything that gets you started.

If your not afraid of heights and have good balance you would make a great flyer. Teams always need good flyers. I wish I could still fly!

I think you'd be a great candidate for a half year team! You could start with tumbling classes now and do the half year when it kicks off (typically anywhere from October-December depending on program)

Babygirl if you want to cheer then you cheer! Your weight and height is a small factor. All you have to do is practice good technique. I don't recruit cheerleaders that cheer I recruiter girl who want to be cheerleaders. If you want to get a good foundation, learn the basics and perfect your motions, jumps and stunting technique, then research some good solid req teams. They are typically inexpensive and these days their routines typically have and all-star flare.
