I’ve never done cheer but I’ve always wanted to. My mom doesn’t really think is a good idea but I have a year and 1/2 before I start high school and I think i have plenty enough time to practice cheers, increase flexibility, learn jumps, etc. But ever since my mom said i’m already starting late, I feel so much like an underdog and I don’t know if I should still tryout for JV. I just need some advice and if I really am starting too late.

It's never too late. I started in Grade 10 (11 for competition). If you can, go to some open gyms at all-star gyms near you (or maybe if your high schools offer similar, there too) and ask coaches there to help you get started. If you can take some tumbling classes too, that can help, but open gym might be easier and maybe cheaper if your Mom is not yet fully on board. Ask people there to teach you some basic stunts

I started cheer two years ago and am already level 6! If you put in the commitment I know you can do it, here are my tips,
1. Stretch- there are some great youtube videos out there try looking up anna mcnulty. Commit a day of the week for a long leg flexibility and a day for back flexibility. Try to do a short whole body stretch every day.
2. Tumbling- stunting is a lot less difficult to learn and you will probably be tough grips etc at your cheer team. Focus on getting tumbling go to an all-star gym near you and take one or two group lessons every week (I would recommend 1 group and 1 private lesson but privates are more pricey) try to focus on skills that are common in high school cheer like a standing back tuck which is very important. Also see if your all-star gym offers jump training and or flight school.
Workout- try to be active and work on your stamina as well as core and leg strength. Arm strength is also very important. Try to do a cardio workout two days a week annd a whole body workout 2 days and run for 20 minutes on off days. Over the weekend rest but walk for 20 minutes!
I think you should try cheer is an awesome experience and I hope that this helps!

Definitely go for it! You’ve got plenty of time, and many cheerleaders start in high school or even later. Being an “underdog” can actually be a great advantage because it pushes you to work hard and surprise everyone. Over the next year and a half, you can make huge progress in flexibility, strength, and skill if you commit to a practice routine—plus, that’s plenty of time to build confidence!

If you want extra guidance, Cheer Builder is a great resource that offers online tools for anyone starting out, with tips on building skills like jumps and flexibility, even if you’re learning from home. And trust me, it’s never too late to start cheering if you’ve got the passion! Keep practicing, and don’t let self-doubt stop you.
