This is something that I have only discussed with some close friends and family. What do you do when you have a son/daughter who has exceptional talent but is at a gym that is small and rather unknown in the "cheer world"? I would one day like to see my CP go to Worlds and be able to compete aainst the best of the best but I doubt our gym will take us that route? So, I would like to get some suggestions/opinions on what any of you might do if you were in my situation...stay loyal to your gym or find a gym that will take you down the highly competitive path?

What does she want? I say ask her. If she is progressing then there is no need to rush her off to another gym. If they have taken her as far as they can then you may want to move on. I know that my daughter wants to compete at Worlds one day so I am glad I am in a gym that goes. Talk to her and see what she wants to do and go from there.

How old is she? If she is mini or youth age, I say let her continue to grow in her environment and get better as an individual because she will have plenty of time to be on level 5 as a junior and senior! But the decision is up to you. If you think the gym she is at is hendering her growth, then move. But make sure it's what she wants too.

She just turned 9 not too long ago. Right now she is on a Y3 & J2 team. She makes a lot of comments saying she wishes her gym was better or that she wishes they worked harder. I think I am just thinking down the road which direction I should take.

your cp is 9 correct?? i don't think Worlds is any concern for her right now. yes she may be advanced for her age, but if the gym has trained her to the point she is at now i'm sure they can do more. and since she won't even be old enough to go to worlds for a while yet there's no rush to take her out. unless she has outgrown the program/ there is no longer a team for her at the current gym. i don't think there's any need to change gyms right now. she can still train and advance on her own where she is. you never know there could be more kids like her hiding around in there. or one day when she is old enough there could be a worlds team there. you never know. regardless of what gym she's at if she's at worlds she will be competing against the best of the best when that time comes. if you truly feel like she has outgrown the program then i would say move her, but only after talking to her about it first. she has plenty of time left in her cheer career. let her be a big fish in a small pond a little while longer. because you could end up moving her to a larger bigger name gym that she ends up not even liking once you get there.
talk to her about it. if you both agree that she's gone as far as she can where you are then i'd say check out other programs. if it's not broken don't go trying to fix it. ;)

She is progressing as we speak, however I feel like eventually we are going to hit a brick wall. Just to give an example my CP is the only girl under the age of 14 who has a full in our gym. There are only a total of 7 girls in our entire gym with fulls. I just dont forseee our gym going to great heights anytime sooneven though I love them dearly and love the small gym atmosphere I dont want to one day look back and think I failed my CP.

I think this is great advice! It gives me a lot to think about! Thank you (:

There are some drawbacks to going to a "bigger" and "better" gym. In a small gym more kids are allowed to shine and cross over to higher level teams. My cp is 10 throws a double full, jumps to tuck, and a 1 to full. She flies level 5 as well. She is not a superstar in our gym. She just blends in with all the other talent. She is happy with that and so am I.
The positive side of bigger gyms is that they usually have better choreography(they have the money to pay), better equipment, and go to bigger comps. I like being in a big gym because my daughter pushes herself because there is so much talent that she works extra hard.

@fameoumom.....yes see thats the thing she loves all the attention she recieves because she is one of the best in our gym however it would be nice to train with the best of the best! BTW congrats on your CP and her skills(:

Maybe if there is a bigger gym nearby take her there for some lessons or classes. See if she likes it. I am sure she gets alot of attention being that young with amazing skills. Good luck with whatever you decide!!! Thanks for the compliment. She works really hard and I am very proud.

Just because a gym is small or unknown in the cheer world it does not mean they can't go to Worlds but you should find out if having a L5 team and heading to Worlds is even a goal of your gym. If your current gym has no intention or goal of working towards worlds and it is something your CP wants to do, then moving to another gym once CP outgrows her current gym is not too unreasonable. It could be worth a talk with your current gym owner.

Personally this is a move I would consider if my CP were in the same position. In a way we did by moving him from Pop-Warner to All Stars where he went from a big fish in a little pond to a little fish in a big pond. Fortunately our current gym does have a L5 team and he has been to Worlds once and is heading there again this year.

As a side note. If Worlds is a goal of your CP don't rush her development to quick. Sometimes it is better to be on an age appropriate team, especially at younger ages, for your CP's own personal mental development.

PS, shameless plug time. This would make a great post in the Cheer Parents Online section. :)

Great advice. My CP wants to go to Worlds that is her ultimate goal and she has the drive and determination to get there. As forour gym it has only been open 5 years so I sometimes feel in a way we are their "test dummys" if that makes sense? && haha I am still new to this forum I never know where to post anything ;)

Oh wow how I love these talented little girls! Wish I would have started a lot sooner!! That's awesome that your CP is so talented. As long as she keeps growing with talent and as an individual, I think staying is a good option because right now that's where her cheer family is. Goodluck(: wish y'all the best!

That brings me to one other question. How does everyone feel about individual cheer? My CP's coach mentioned it as a possibility for her next season. Is it worth it? What are the plus/minuses? All feedback welcomed!!
