GANGLION CYSTS!!!!!!!

The worst things ever. They are in my left wrist and cause constant pain and I can't even put pressure on it because of this problem. I can do backbends and such but after 3 times of doing that it starts to let me not lift my body weight with it. Surgery is not an answer because it has an 80% or something chance of it coming back. For cheer next year, how am I going to be able to do anything!?

PLEASE, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH GANGLION CYSTS!!!

Ganglion cysts are usually caused when the fluid that lubricates the tendon (or ligament, I forget which) is leaking into an open space and then it gets encapsulated. You can see if it can be aspirated but sometimes the fluid is too thick to be drawn out through the needle however even if the aspiration doesn't work the attempts to aspirate might break up the cyst and the fluid dissolves back into your system. I do not know what, other than surgery, can be done if the aspiration doesn't work, but you might want to take a further look at what is actually causing the cyst - do you have tendonistis in your wrist by chance as well?

I have ganglion cysts, but mine don't hurt as much..mine is also mostly in my left wrist, and started coming back when I was doing wrist-intensive sports (setting in volleyball, cheerleading, heck-when I do a lot of weight-baring exercising). The surgery return rate is anywhere from 12-41%, according to wikipedia. If it's causing you THAT much grief, I suggest looking into surgery. Mine were more of an annoyance/awkward looking with occasional pain, so I haven't bothered with surgery.

Ask your doctor about options you have ( perhaps show them a video of what you do and what skills hurt your wrists so they better understand that it's not just waving pom pons). If there isn't much they can do, I'd consider perhaps moving into other ways to be involved in the sport aside from directly competing (such as assistant coaching, choreographing, etc.) or looking into other less strenuous wrist activities.

I cheered with a girl in high school that developed tendentious in her knees, and ultimately had to quit cheerleading because the pain was too much since the doctors really could not do much. She tried to wear braces and things to lessen the impact, but after a year of having the problem she couldn't do it anymore. It ended up being better for her in the end though, as she got involved in Student Council (which she never would have joined previously) and ended up organizing the national conference her senior year as a representative for our state (it was a big deal!). She was just average on our cheerleading squad, but as a Student Council member she was amazing!

Either way, it's going to be a difficult time for you whatever ends up happening, so just go in with an open mind and be optimistic! The world works in strange ways many times. I wish you the best.

I had the one in my wrist drained. It wasn't THAT painful, but i do have a major fear of needles...

Funny story... Me and a girl on my team both had one in our wrist and one of the seniors told us if we punched something really hard it would go away... :stupid:

I have two right beside eachother. I've been getting steroid shots in one, and now the other popped up. I'm supposed to have surgery but I don't want to so I just take pain medicine and grin and bear it. It's gotten pretty bad at times where there's no way I can tumble. I recommend you go to the hand specialist at the orthopedist and see what they say.

I'm sorry. :C My best friend has this problem and she's a dancer, not to mention she literally hurts herself more in a semester than I have in my lifetime. We both had wrist problems but I just strained a tendon tumbling, she said she has that in her wrist after going to the doctor.
She hasn't had surgery yet, and I can't really offer any advice other than keeping it wrapped up. I'm so sorry.
