This is my first year coaching school cheer. The athletic director suggested I spoke to parents to address issues before dismissing the girl from the team. But sometimes the issue is so bad I just dismiss them. We sent out a code of conduct before accepting them to the team, the athlete and parent had to review and sign so they know the rules and we emphasize them all the time. One of the rules is if you are in school you are expected to be at practice and or a game. Yesterday I filled in for the modified coach (I’m JV). A mod girl went home from school the other day sick, she missed the school & practice the following day which was the day before a game. The modified coach received a message from mom notifying her she will be at the game to “support her teammates”. Which turned into her being a regular student with her friends in the stands. She did not wear her uniform to school along with her teammates, she did not attend practice after school, she went to a fast food restaurant with her friends, i messaged mom to let her know these things and that im liable for her, so she is not allowed to roam around or leave and she is to be with me. Mom said she would talk to her. But I ran into the girl in the hallway and she was totally dismissive and disrespectful, I let her know she was supposed to be at practice, not at a fast food restaurant and with us and at the game with us if she went to school. She completely dismissed me and gave me attitude and walked away. I went up to her in the bleachers and told her she can sit with her friends or she’s not apart of the team anymore or she can sit with us if she still wants a spot on the team. She shrugged her shoulders and didn’t look at me. She continued to roam the school with her friends and did not sit with the team. I let the modified coach know and the parent. I told her it seems she doesn’t want to be on the team. What would you do? Do you dismiss her from the team or do you let her just quit? Or let her be on the team only for this to happen again.
