CP's comp squad had States yesterday. She's a freshman alternate, so she practices in full with the varsity girls, but her role on site this weekend was entirely in support of her teammates. She was wearing her warmups the whole day at the venue -- never in uniform. Her team's warmups, though, have cropped hoodies. And she and the other alternate had their belly button rings in. Word has since gotten back to the coaches that another team reported our girls to the judges for a belly ring deduction. Again, the alternates were non-participants.
I've never heard of it being an issue for anyone not on the mat to wear jewelry. The rule is intended for safety, and this application feels like it's more for aesthetics or decorum. While I acknowledge that belly piercings used to be a little taboo, they're pretty much standard issue these days.
