what do you guys all wear to tryouts/ plan to wear this year? It's my first year at a real allstar gym and I want to make a good impression. They are giving us t-shirts and bows there, and I will wear black nike pros. Should I do a poof or not? Will it seem like I am overdoing it? And what makeup should I wear? :) thanks to all of you in advance. Last thing: is it a good idea to wear waterproof mascara if it gets hot?

Do you know other girls who cheer where you're trying out? If so you should ask them. If not, pay attention to comp photos from the gym and see what they do. If they do a poof, do one if you can, but if they don't poof their hair then they may see it as overdoing it... Just pay attention to the particular gym's style, not the general cheer world
Waterproof mascara, yes, and wear some makeup but be careful. If it's going to be running all down your face it's not worth it! but a little eyeliner/mascara, and some lipstick won't hurt. Make sure you're wearing something you're comfortable in. If you're not comfortable in spandex and are going to be adjusting the whole time, don't wear them. Now is also not the time to break in new shoes. Anything that could hinder your performance is a no. Make sure your hair is up and out of your face, if you poof it you may want to practice.... Nothing is worse than a poof that goes lopsided/deflates the moment you do a cartwheel! And with the non poof section make sure your ponytail is tight so you're not having to tighten it mid-dance.
Good luck!

I think waterproof mascara is a fine idea. If I was only allowed one type of makeup to wear it would be mascara. Otherwise I would just do a little natural make up for clinic days and then maybe a little more (natural smokey eye & a little colored lip gloss or lipstick) for the final tryout day if you are in front of judges. For hair, high pony with a bow! Good luck :)

For tryouts I've found that liquid makeup seems to last the longest. I mix a little bit of Fix+ spray into my foundation for hold, and use cream based highlighter and blush to make my features pop. Then a bit more Fix+ spray to set the makeup; for some reason this makes everything really blend and look natural not to mention my makeup never has to be touched up. I'm kind of against mascara but that's just personal opinion, as I hate worrying about it smudging under my eyes or needing to be re-applied. Instead I compromise with a soft coral lipstick and a little bit of shimmer at the corner of my eyelids to make them pop. Pouf or no pouf? No pouf, but a cute braided bang can always be an alternative if you wanted to do something a little different.

Hope this helped. Good luck at tryouts!

If you are trying out for a Worlds or L5 team, you need to LOOK L5.

Make up. Hair. They need to say "fierce" not "high schooler headed for school tryouts."

Wear what you feel comfortable in. Make sure your hair is clean and out of your face. If you show up without a poof, they're not going to be like "omg that outsider why isn't she wearing a poof who does she think she even is" I've never worn excessive makeup to an allstar tryout...I just wear it how I normally go to school or less. If you walked into my gym like, full glitz for tryouts you'd probably get some confused stares, but every gym is different. Prepare to get hot and sweaty if you will be stunting or if the gym is really hot inside, so honestly less is more. Let your SKILLS and your CONFIDENCE speak for themselves...not how you're dressed :)

Be comfortable in what you are wearing. If you are comfy in a sports bra and spanx, then wear that (unless the gym has specific rules against it). If you are going to wear a tshirt, make sure it's more fitted, or you can go the fitted tanktop route. Hair should be up with a bow, even if they are giving you one, you don't need a poof. You don't need full makeup, but a natural + isn't a bad idea. Natural eye, maybe a natural smokey eye...mascara, little blush ect. White cheer shoes.

The biggest thing I look for in people trying out is confidence. I don't need cocky, I'm better than everyone here, attitude. Show me you are confident in what you are doing. Present yourself that way. Nothing needs to be over the top, but make me want to remember you.

^^^^^YES. CONFIDENCE IS KEY.

Example: So you only have 2 to tuck and you see that others have more complex passes at your level.

You throw that tuck like it's the last pass whip double to arabian to double at Worlds. And you smile while you're doing it.

You stunt, you pull that body position like you KNOW it is the greatest needle ever pulled.

And just in case you have never heard this, it's pretty much Cheer 101 but don't ever say "Oh I messed up!" or make that "oh I messed up oh my god" face that people make.

I see it all the time. My HS Varsity comp team consists of experienced cheerleaders and they STILL will make a face when they make a mistake during the dance. Or they'll throw their tuck at clinics and say "oh my god, I messed up!" and get all freaked out.

Honestly, I know you messed up so you can't hide the mistake, but I NEED to see how you RECOVER.

Do you keep going? Do you make a weird face, mess up like 2 more 8 counts then finish out? Do you freeze? Do you cry? Those are important things to know.

A kid threw a pass for me once at all star evals, touched down on it, and seriously sat on the mat and cried (junior aged kid.)

I know it's stressful, but you just cried. On the mat. Are you going to cry if you touch down at a comp?

^^^exactly. We know you made a mistake, you know you made a mistake. Recover, recover, recover.
