I have a 9 year old & 5 year old CP. My 9 year old wears a Youth XS top. The cut of it is the same as the WCSS top, with the off the shoulder style that looks like it is layered with a sports bra. My children are... I guess a good descriptor would be "slight". Very, very small frame. The YXS top is still a little big across the shoulders on the 9 year old, and she has some growing room in all of the areas of the top except the length. My 5 year old is going to move up to a full-year team next year, and will wear the same style top. Actually, I will may just pass my older CP's top down to her. Since my older one has the smallest size available, and she still has room, obviously her sister who is 4 years younger than her will swim in the top. I don't think that even with alterations I would be able to get it small enough & still maintain the style of it. My question is, do you think it is possible to shrink the top if I put it in the dryer?

That would depend on the fabric. I would be concerned about damaging any trim you might have on the uniform, if you dry it on a heat high enough to shrink it. Any glittery stuff like fabrics, rhinestones, etc?

Not signifcantly. I do agree with TheUltimateFan though, that the dryer may damage trim, atypical fabrics or embellishments.

Yeah, it has mystique trim along the bottom of the top & has bling trim & logo. The only reason I was considering it was because I have been known to accidentally toss our blingy warmups & mystique sports bras into the dryer on occasion, and they have come out unscathed. The fabric of the uniform, it's spandex-like. I don't know what the actual name of it is.

Not sure who makes your uniforms, but I threw my cp's GK in the dryer a million times and it never shrunk at all (but the good news is it also held up its shape and nothing came off). I'm not sure if other companies' uniforms are the same or not? But I don't think it would shrink. :(

I think ilikebigbows has the right idea. A tailor can take them in and leave the extra fabric so if they grow you can let it out with little damage.

:)

I don't think that the areas that you need it to shrink would be what shrinks; you would have all of the excess fabric left that would need to be removed by an expert seamstress. It would be baggy in those areas and it would not be filled out by her little body and it would not look right. I think that the best way for you to hand it down to your little one would be to take it to a seamstress who can remove the excess fabric and adjust the size to the smaller size. The trim may shrink, but like the others said, you run the risk of ruining that portion of it by throwing the uniform into the dryer and I wouldn't risk it.

If it's stretchy odds are it is a synthetic blend and not likely to shrink. The location of the problem with the fit (across the shoulders) is also not an easy alteration. I agree with the others that a tailor is the best option.

a tailor knows what they're doing... the issue is keeping the uniform proportional to the original uni. the shoulder area isn't an easy place to alter, add in the straps and cutouts and it's a disaster to fix.

hopefully the shrinking works out for you MomOf2ThatsMe ! otherwise, i hope your adorable little peanut has a growth spurt in the next year ;)
