Hi!! I am starting a new gym and I am trying to get some advice on how to gain athletes. The previous team I was attached to gained their athletes through an afterschool cheer program that the head coach was working for. I don't have the same ability and starting completely from scratch. Any ideas on recruiting for an all star cheer team?

I started my team 17 years ago. We are a rec team but I know many allstar programs that started as rec and then moved to allstar. My suggestion to get athletes is to go to the local schools. Ask the school to make announcements or email blasts/ send flyers home. You can also ask your town to have a free clinic that the town hosts with you as the instructor. This will often bring lots of new kids in that are curious but dont want to make a commitment. Another idea is to maybe partner with a local gymnastics gym or dance studio that offers tumbling. They can offer cheer clinic with their tumble classes. Social media is also a great way to get started. Just post on as many groups as possible. Hope these tips help!

It does help! Thank you!!

Volunteer. Many MS, HS, community centers, church daycare/schools, etc. are now require by their insurance companies to get background checks for anyone working with their kids. Call these places, volunteer to get background checked, ask if you can volunteer in some capacity with fitness, and casually talk to the kids about your gym.

Partnerships. If you have other small businesses nearby, ask if they would be willing to handout a free or reduce trial class card to their customers if you handout something similar for them.

Social media. Be the local go to SM guy that gives tips and drills and have your business name in the background.

Interact and engage. If your schools or local community have fairs, ask if you can set up a booth. Engage with parents while waiting in lines and have a business card ready to hand them. Be available, and patient, for questions and teaching parents along with the kids about AS cheer.

Website and reviews. Make sure you have an informative website and encourage happy customers to provide good reviews. Be transparent about goals and money.

If you are located in a warehouse or a storefront that is not easily seen, consider information business flags or signs, near the main road.

Get creative. Renting out space for birthday parties, scouts to work on fitness badges, moms/dads to line dance, yoga, pilates, zumba, scrapbook...anything that can get your business known in the community is going to help you with word of mouth.

My old high school would do a pee-wee cheer camp. Maybe you could do something similar with nearby schools? Good luck!

Definitely reach out to area schools. When my girls were in AS cheer, the gym owner would host local middle and high school teams on Saturdays so they could practice on a competition sized mat. We had a LOT of kids wind up coming to the gym that way.

If you haven't already, start an Instagram account and post EVERY day. Use Reels / stories / photos.

2 weeks before team tryouts, start a local ad campaign on whatever outlets you can afford. (radio / TV / Newspaper). You are targeting the parents more than the students so plan your target demographics accordingly. If you don’t have the budget for local media, do a Google and Meta ad campaign online. (Tons of tutorials out there.)

In the meantime volunteer, be in the community, talk to people in coffee shops and cafes, represent your brand, build consistency in your branding, and always be ready to give the elevator speech for your gym. People will care about “Why” far more than they will about care about “What”. Practice knowing exactly why they need to be part of your program and you’ll be well on your way.
