The problem with rec is the crazy mess that exists from lack of oversight, think all stars back in the day before the USASF.

I coach a team and they compete UCA school style, following AACCA/NFHS since that is what they will do when they get to HS. We only do local competitions hosted by UCA high schools to ensure our routine matches the scoresheet. But there are some teams that spend the money to go to NHSCC and compete.

A lot of rec teams follow USASF levels and many don’t even do a real cheer (full 2:30 music). They compete on an all star score sheet. They are essentially all star teams that cheer for a sport. The 2 types do not mix well.

I took a look at this yesterday. And I feel like I am the only one on the board so far that sees this as a positive thing.

You can choose traditional rec i.e. with a cheer and 1:30 music or performance rec which is 2:30 music. All scoring mirrors All Star. You are either traditional rec which cheers at games, or club rec which doesn't.

I think this makes rec much more competitive as a lower commitment, lower cost option for families. I think it also makes rec more attractive to high school kids coming off their HS season, and kids with injuries who still want to be part of the sport, but their bodies or minds can't handle year round training anymore.

It will force All Star gyms to make sure they are offering a great product.

I would love to see rec options for older kids. Here, there are several if your child is below abour age 11-12, but once they reach middle school, it’s school cheer, All Star, or nothing. Maybe this will make offering rec more attractive.

False again. We attended 3 Varsity Nationals and 4 WC bids. Only 1 Nationals was STP. I think they’ll be fine. Interesting though it will be the same weekend as UCA Nationals.

I realize not everyone will understand, but this event might be the greatest thing to happen to rec cheer in a while. Look- I was an allstar athlete for over a decade, on highly competitive teams that traveled to NCA, Summit, etc. Nowadays, I coach a rec team. We have two allstar gyms in the area. TWO. And they’re both programs with less than 100 kids.
What I’m getting at is that allstar cheer is not as accessible in many areas- my team is based out of a town that is an hour and a half from the nearest gym and the fact of the matter is that none of my parents could afford to drive there given the commitment level of allstar cheer- multiple practices a week, $400 uniforms, etc. I would be SO excited if a coaching opportunity had come up at an allstar gym, but these kids cane out of nowhere and stole my heart! I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now!
And currently we are being faced with a US Finals decision and I hate it all the way around- if we go to location X only one of my teams will have any competition- but at location Y, the other team will have competitors. I despise the hype around US Finals being an “end of season” event because they literally give bids to EVERY team 1st-3rd place. Those “bids” aren’t really bids at all. They’re just using the word “bid” to make it seem special. And I’m not trying to take away from teams that have gone and had a wonderful experience, but given my experience as an athlete going to TRUE bid events where we had the chance to compete against teams from the other side of the country- this ain’t it. I’m excited to see what becomes of this competition, because we really need someone to bring all the rec teams together for one big event- there are more programs out there than you’d be able to imagine.

ETA: in response to the comment above about performance vs. traditional rec- while traditional rec requires a cheer and performance (club) rec does not, inversely it requires community outreach and performances within community settings which we are required to document in order to prove eligibility. It is a really rewarding thing to be a part of.

I'm curious to see will they still keep the Rec divisions at UCA/NHSCC? Especially since they just added game day rec this season. Will you now be able to get a bid to the Quest at the UCA Regionals in place of NHSCC or in addition to?
