High School This Can't Be Legal So What Do I Do?

At the high school pep rally today the girls were doing all collegiate stunts and pyramids. 2 1/2 level pyramids and lots of tosses with twists and inversions. It didn't look safe at all. As a parent, what do you recommend I do?

Send all relevant info to Jim Lord ([email protected]). School, school address, date you saw them, pictures and video if you have them.

I honestly would contact Jim Lord as stated above. The best way to stop it is have it come from the top. Make sure the school is aware there are rules and the coach is aware. While most are, some certainly are not and that is an issue. I hope this person is not aware there are rules instead of intentionally doesn't want to follow them.

While traveling I saw something similar at a high school out East and when I saw it I freaked out, went to the coach (nicely) and was met with "Those rules are for competitions only, don't worry we won't get in trouble." SERIOUSLY. I emailed the top and from what I've heard from friends the school is doing normal stunts now.

With all of the new rules, our district is watching everyone that visits, even for sideline. I don't know where people get this stuff from :-( It is not ok and they may ruin it for all!

My cheer squad participates in a cheer competition that happens at a local tournament. They are just judged on their sidelines and timeout cheers but it's still a big deal as there are over 15 local teams there. My squad was actually counted off 10 points for not doing crowd leading cheers on the actual floor during a 30 second time out. It caused us to finish 9th instead of 5th like we should have. When I brought it up to the judges of the competition they said they didn't know about such a rule. My girls were heartbroken and all I could do is reassure them that we will continue to follow the rules even if that means we place lower.
We also had an instance where a coach came out on the floor during a time out cheer and stunted with the girls. She was a main base for a stunt. I couldn't believe it. While at times I have joked about helping them, I would never do that. Downright embarassing. It's just ridiculous the stuff that some "judges" and squads do in regards to breaking rules or not even knowing them.

Contact the coach first, maybe she's not aware of the rules. If it continues, then go to authorities.

Believe it or not, it's actually quite typical for high schools to be performing pyramids and stunts that are illegal to compete with during pep rallys, half time at football/basketball games.. When I cheered in high school, I saw plenty of it happen at away games. My own coach, however, was very much a rule follower.

At my daughter's high school, we have the typical padded blue mat which provides much better protection than the gym floor. I saw a video from another high school in our area that was doing level 5 stunts and tumbling with no mat!! I was shocked that the school didn't use a mat and am very grateful my daughter doesn't go to that school. She's already had one severe concussion and that was landing on the mat... she most likely would have had permanent damage or worse if it had been on the regular gym floor.
