My mom is the nicest human in the universe, and wouldn't hesitate to take another kid under her wing. But she is always too polite to be like "honey, I drove your kids across the country and fed them for 2 days – give me some cash pls?"

My sister is the same way.

She once took my niece's dance teammate with her to a comp because the parent had to work. Parent promised to pay her back.

She paid all gas for 3.5 hour drive there AND back, 3 meals a day and snacks for two days, extra tights because the child had none, and extras (because you really can't have YOUR kids ask for Starbucks, buy for yours, and tell your extra child she can't have any.)

She returns and mom hands her $25. The entire trip was obviously well beyond that.

I was all "That's unacceptable, you need to let that mom know how much you spent and ask for your money." She wouldn't.

I am just not this nice.

Wowzers.

I will say that this time was the last time she did it because it was a lot of money! She won't do it anymore unless it's a parent she has known really well who she knows will pay her up front (like, the parents whose kids have been dancing with them for years.)

I'll go on a coffee round at college or work, and can never bring myself to ask people to pay me. So I instinctively say "don't worry, this round's on me!" and instantly regret it.

^^^I will at times do this for some other teachers/counselors in the building. Every now and then, if someone can't pay me I'll tell them it's on me. I can miss out on the occasional $5, but not every week.
