Hello guys! I have something... "weird" to ask you.

I coach a level 2 team (age 12-14) in Canada. For the first time in years, our team leads in our division. In 3 weeks, we have our biggest competition of the year. We never won there, nor have a podium. We don't choose the athletes that come in our program, and most of them never even cheered before. This is my little miracle team.

I was looking for a little something to boost their confidence for this competition. I know they all look up to american all star teams. Sometimes, when they try something harder and succeed, they say "OMG I am sooooo all-star". Most of them dream to be as good as what they see on videos. All three coaches are or were on high level teams but nah, that doesn't count! :P

Is there any way I could get in touch with someone who could do a small video for them? Just a hello and good luck or something from an athlete or a coach on a higher level team. I know they would be crrrrrazy happy and proud.

I know it is weird, and I am probably not the only one who ask that. Feel free to refuse...

You should tweet some level 5 athletes. Adrian Butler from Top Gun Large Coed normally responds to people on twitter and so does Gabi Butler (former Top Gun athlete, California All Stars SMOED athlete, and Gym Tyme)

I don't really have a lot of day to day contact with anyone they would probably know now that I am in college. But I have a couple recommendations for you:

First, define the goal of the team for the weekend. I recommend staying away from 'winning' as the goal. They could go hit a flawless routine, not win, and then they didn't meet their goal but in reality had a great performance. Make it about them doing the absolute best they can. Winning really is a by-product of doing the best they can. If you are crafty with words and leading a group you can let them come to this conclusion on their own if you like. That age though I would probably just tell them the goal.

Second, control emotions! The football coach for my university was talking on a radio show about how all the fans want the athletes to get excited to play in big games. He said the trick isn't getting athletes excited, it is actually getting them calm and focussed enough to do their job. Every athlete gets geeked up enough as is because that is what anyone who is competitive does! Your athletes are probably SUPER excited to go to this event (as well as super nervous). I don't think they really need inspiration as much as focus and calm to get them to perform. Set the goal for them (as listed above) and then pay attention to the goal. Always remind them that everyone gets nervous! Seriously being nervous isn't a bad thing. It is when you let nervousness consume you that it is a bad thing.
