So tryouts are right around the corner and our gym asks what team you want to be on for next season. My CP is mini aged with level 2 skills but sat out last season as we switched gyms so has only been tumbling this last year. She's flown and based on mini 1 teams prior. This gym has a mini 2 team that she would most likely base on as she will be the oldest birth year and has more muscle on her than some other mini flyers. She didn't like her year of basing since the girl that flew was exactly her size so she found it hard (rightfully so) but did awesome at it. She's also great at flying. She wants to fly but also be level 2. My question: Would you pick mini 2 for level 2 but basing or youth 1 for flying, both elite. I would say youth 2 elite but she needs work on jumps and not sure how much faster dance/choreo is so don't want to setup her up for failure at the new gym or to be stressed out. They also have a youth prep 2.1 that could be an option. Thanks!

If she doesn't meet the needs of the team you choose:
Would she still be placed on that team? Or,
Does she become an alternate on that team? Or,
Do they place her on another team? Or,
Does she not make any team?

If you are allowed to choose, I'd say her first choice is to fly youth 2.

However, food for thought..Many flyers get their hearts broken when they fly for a couple of years and then are told they need them as a base or back. If you and her father are tall, if she's avg or above avg height for her age, it might be beneficial to eventually consider this when choosing a team. That's not to say there aren't tall flyers out there who are incredible but, it will always come down to what the bases and backs can manage. An athlete who can fly and base is very valuable to a team.

Thanks for the response! I think the gym only uses it to get an idea of where we think we should be and if it comes down to two athletes and one choose a different level or age group when making final decisions. They definitely don't let it overall influence placement as that is based on team needs. I'm 5'3 and dad is 5'9. We have some really short people in our families but I agree that flying now doesn't mean flying in the future or after puberty sets in. I'd rather her base to meet some new friends her age and work on level 2 stunting/skills but she sees all the flyers at the gym and has stars in her eyes...LOL! I can't blame her and she's good at flying too I wanted thoughts from experienced cheer moms on what they'd choose looking back. She also says she could crossover this year and I said, it's a new gym so that is probably not an option but I'm not ready to commit to that just yet...LOL!
