Hello! So I was a gymnast for 12 years and decided to be done with the sport and tried out for All Star cheer last year. I joined an all girl team (level 5) that became coed this year. I'm a senior in high school and I don't know much about cheerleading as far as college goes. Can someone help me out? What should I look for? How do tryouts work? etc
Thanks so much
What was said above is super important, so definitely follow those steps.
However, it is important to realize that college cheerleaders cheer at games. While it may not seem like a big deal, game days are pretty important, especially to big schools, and it's not just limited to that. There are school events, alumni events, and all sorts of things cheerleaders are expected to attend. And you really only get to compete once a year (typically UCA in January or NCA in April) with maybe a possibility of an exhibition or two.
College cheerleaders are expected to have great game day skills, which means tight motions, loud voices, proper "spiriting," etc. it's not just about being able to through a full and hit a rewind heel stretch double down.
I'm not trying to scare you away, but all the girls I've cheered with who come from a gymnastics to all star background have never enjoyed game days! And it's not an option to not cheer and just compete. I don't want you to make a team and commit then end up not liking it!
Have you looked into Acro and Tumbling? I don't know anyone who has done it personally, but it may be worth a look.
