With this (anticipated) gold, the US will equal the number of golds earned in 2012 at 46, but earned 18 more total medals than 2012.

Not at all surprised. Hope he has a good chunk of $ saved from all his years on top, I can't see anyone sponsoring him again in future. Stupid a$$.

I can. In a few years I can see him getting sponsors again. I think for now he just has to lay low and show remorse for what he's done, improve his public image. Lots of athletes lose endorsements over far worse things and get them back/get new ones. If Phelps retires and Lochte continues his career he could be the new top US swimmer (ETA: top male) and he'll get endorsments/sponsors again.

I don't think he is going to have that opportunity. It is not like he was phenomenal at this Olympics aside from the relay.

He wasn't phenominal, no. But he still won a gold medal which is still an achievement. I wouldn't say this is it for him, he is young enough and good enough to make a comeback at the next olympics if he really wanted. Athletes' careers have big ups and big downs. And they quit and come back. And they have scandals that they recover from when they take the right steps (which I'm sure his PR guy is helping him do.) This hole he's dug himself seems manageable to climb out of. And I think he can get sponsors down the road if he works on fixing his public image.

Not sticking up for him, just saying a lot of people have recovered from a lot worse and are doing great today.

Ryan is 32; I can't see him swimming for much longer tbh. Not that he can't, just that it doesn't seem likely. I do think he'll find success in the future, but I think it'll be from the sidelines not the pool.

I'm sure he can channel the energy that he exerted in vandalizing the gas station into training for 2020 but that's none of my business.

I've never rolled my eyes so much in my life. My eyeballs hurt after the snippets of the Lochte interview.

Speaking of eyes has anyone watched the What does E.Y.E.S spell videos going around YouTube

You guys remember that Phelps went through a big "scandal" too, with smoking pot and he seems to have recovered just fine. If Ryan hangs around for 2020 and kicks some butt, people will pick him back up. We don't know the details. A company might release that they are dropping an athlete in order to protect their own image, but there can be some hush-hush deals that mean that the athlete is actually only being dropped for 6 months.

What teams are you most excited to see? Weber has become one of my favorites! Their stunting and tumbling skills are incredible!
Thread 'Introduce Yourself!'
Let's get the conversation going with some simple introductions. Tell us about yourself. I'll start. My wife and I are actually gymnastics coaches. We have 3 children that are all gymnasts. I took over this site as I am a huge forum junkie. I also run ChalkBucket.com (gymnastics community). ChalkBucket has many parents who have athletes that transition to all-star cheer. This site is a perfect place for them to continue with all the fun that forums are! Also... I am here to learn...
