Okay so this will be my daughters first chest season performing individual routines in competitions. The coach asked me to pick her favorite songs and she would make a mix from their. She's 6 years old and is into Justin burner of course and music like pitbull.while on you tube I noticed alot of the songs in that age group were more conservative,as in girls wanna have fun and songs similar. She used to be on jr level 2 team but we had to move out of town and now she's on a Tini lvl one (6-8). Do you all
Think music choice could work against her? Would you guys consider the music inappropriate for her age group? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :) thanks!

I would be careful with music selections, as you never know how conservative the judges will be (the obvious no cursing, suggestive language, etc.). That being said, the music doesn't have to be all oldies or kids bop......Justin Beiber (i'm guessing that's what you meant by Justin Burner) should be fine as well as many current songs on the radio at the moment. I'd be careful with Pitbull songs, as many have innuendos or are suggestive, since your daughter is so young. You'd rather have the judges be thinking "wow she's adorable & fierce" than "6 year old shimmying to hotel motel holiday inn.....i'm creeped out".

Regardless of music choice however, if your daughter has the skills and execution then the song selection really won't matter too much in the overall picture (just don't go over the top to creep out the judges).

Okay thanks for the suggestion, definitely crossing out pitbull! Yes, I meant Justin beiber-I hate auto correct on I phone lol! We just have not done this before and from the competitions we have been to it seems as if they all like different things! Some seem more conservative than others...

In the past I've found that music choices haven't adversely affected scores for individual routines. It may be because cheerleading is new to New Zealand, but at many competitions I've seen very young kids (under 10) performing to songs that I would definitely deem 'inappropriate'. And yet these kids always seem to do well, beating out other kids who have more 'appropriate' music. I always found that surprising, but if the judges are good judges, then they will score your daughter based on her ability rather than her music.

I think the music you choose can definitely affect the scores! Conservative is the way to go, instead of risking a lower score simply because the judges didn't think the music was appropriate. Make your daughter stand out......not the music!

judges love oldies and definitely don't pick songs that would be on the top 20 radio station! this is advice comming from my coach who is an nca judge(:

I would let her pick the songs and as long as they are not risque in any sense then shes fine! You want her to enjoy herself and it will show if she loves the mix! My daughter did individuals for years starting at a tiny and they are some of my fondest memories!!
Good luck!
