All-Star Changing Choeography

Sometimes things don't hit, or people stop doing what they need to do, or things get better/people add new skills. It's expected things will change. Unlike Olympic gymnasts who change routines over the years gearing up for that Olympic quad (adding difficulty and refining skills), however, cheer changes over the course of the season.

I have never had one of my teams (mini-senior) finish a season with the same routine they started with. Our first major changes will start in Dec, after our first 2 comps while we gear up for National season. Routines are constantly evolving. I'd side eye any organization that doesn't improve on their routine throughout the season.
ITA. Routines should definitely get more difficult at the season wears on and kids gain new skills. I just don't see the point in reworking the same section 5 different ways, but not adding any difficulty. My Cp's spot in the dance changed 10 times last year, and I am NOT exaggerating or just throwing a number out there. She had to learn 10 different sets of chorography for dance, and the dance NEVER scored any better. He opening tumbling pass changed 5 times. Again, the problems noted by judges were with timing, sync, and sharpness, and it never improved. I think that the team would have been better served by perfecting the timing, spacing ect on the choreography they had rather than continually changing it.

One time, my coaches hated the choreography they paid for, and they changed the whole thing, even the dance. We then saw the choreographer at a competition...awkward.

Been there more than once unfortunately. Our choreographer had no idea though.

definitely...my team and i had changes for pretty much every competition last year (different motions, positions, skill, etc.)

In our experience, routines change throughout the year. One year my CP was in the back 1st competition and by the end of the season was in the front. I think it all depends on skills gained, if the team can/can't hit, adding difficulty. In addition, music can change as we get ready for Worlds or Summit and then there are many changes.

I joined my team for their last comp of the season but they had a huge break between comos march-july.

The coach asked the team if there was anything that they really wanted changing and they said they wanted the dance harder so it was made harder and looked amazing and really gave us a nice edge at comp. Also stunts were made harder and tumbles changed. We didnt train in a gym so we tended to get quite a lot of injuries due to training on dead floor so that changed the routine but I cant wait to see them this year as they finally have a sprung floor!

Yep. There is likely no program you're going to go to where there are NEVER changes to a routine. As coaches, we need to continuously be re-evaluating routines and kid's placements to create a routine that is going to be a good balance of difficult yet able to hit consistently.

Common reasons for changing routines:

1. A particular section is not hitting and needs to be changed so that it will hit.

2. A particular section is not particularly maxing out the score sheet, so more difficulty is being added to to help it score better.

3. A particular kid left the team/got injured and some things need to be re-worked/changed based on her absence.

4. A particular kid is not hitting in a position/spot and they need to be placed elsewhere, thus changing your child's part.

5. The coaches just generally do not like a section of the routine, they've had outside people look at it, and decided that a section needs to be changed.
