College Cheerleading Crashes

just thought I would share some funny falls and crashes from my days at wichita state... basically bloopers... but really funny and some scary.... enjoy...

Unsafe people are the reason. The videos are documentation and can be a valuable learning tool.

I beg to differ.. talk to any body at AACCA, UCA, NCA.. they'll tell you, "Cheerleaders need to stop putting their videos of crashes on youtube," "Don't tell the press about injuries at practice." UCA teaches a safety seminar at camp and specifically tells the kids and coaches that they need to keep videos like these out of public view because it brings TERRIBLE bad press.. People being unsafe is a personal problem.. when it gets "documented," is when is becomes an industry problem.. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to learn from the girl who almost broke her neck on a double full basket

I'm with Sharkdad on this. Simply not talking about it isn't going to make the problems leading to crashes and injuries go away.

This sums up my entire post pretty much. Unfortunately, this has become a serious issue all over...I think most specifically in school cheerleading vs. all star, however that is almost a completely separate topic! Anyways, I am well aware freak accidents happen (currently have a broken/torn thumb) which is similar to that of any other sport in my opinion. A helmet to the hand, a misplacement of the knee etc. It can happen in any sport just as easily as it does in cheerleading...the only difference is that these injuries 1. appear more frequent in cheerleading 2. cheer injuries are not always taken as serious as they should be..unforunately, I can attest to this from previous injury history :( This particular incident focuses on both the coaches and athletes themselves and is a serious area of improvement in cheerleading. Sorry, I definitely have a lot to say on this topic..especially given my first semester at college-2 casts, 4 x-rays and a bone scan :( I can honestly say I am NOT proud of any of those and those do not make cheerleading any more of a sport..I cannot stand when people/cheermedia utilize injuries/trauma stories to "help" cheer become a recognized sport. In reality, we should be working towards becoming a safer, more stable sport..preventing these injuries, deaths etc. Phew, sorry that was a lot!! :shock:

I can understand where you guys are all coming from.. Not posting the videos doesn't mean the injuries don't happen.. Very legitimate statement.. I think that from my point of view, it's this: cheerleaders think that posting stuff like this is funny, entertaining, cool (I must admit.. I've indulged in my fair share of surfing youtube for tumbling crashes), but it's hard because everyone gets pissed when we get more and more rules. Those rules are made to make cheerleading safer. If the governing bodies continue to see videos like this, where we basically show them that what's allowed is STILL not safe, they will continue to make more rules, so that they aren't facing lawsuits when someone breaks their neck.
