I really like Cheer Match, especially because they maintain some of the "real" competition feel by only allowing you to film once or twice before submitting. And it's free to watch live, which to me shows they genuinely care about their customers. The production quality of the broadcasts is also good.
I do wish their website was a bit easier to navigate. The Overall Leaderboard is cool, but I'd like to see results for each competition week separately. As much as we would like to believe it's possible to compare scores across competitions/different judging panels/different weeks, it really isn't that simple, so I'd like to have the option of viewing each week's results separate. Also, I wish they'd post each week's competition schedule sooner (I think it gets posted the day the event is aired) so that people who are planning to watch live on Friday night can plan their night around the schedule lol.
It's nice that a lot of top gyms are participating in CheerMatch (instead of spreading out to a bunch of different virtual competitions and having nobody compete against each other). It looks like a lot of Level 6 teams are signed up to compete in a special CheerMatch in February, which is nice since there are very few opportunities this season for teams to compete against teams from across the country. I just hope virtual competitions can end soon. If you see some of the camera angles some of these gyms are filming at (in some cases cutting off chunks of the routine), you realize there's no way to make virtual events 100% fair or like a true competition.
Plus, as much as Varsity gets hammered for being a monopoly, cheer does operate better when all its competitions fall under one umbrella and lead to an end goal (ie. Worlds). CheerMatch is great, but it's also making an already highly saturated competition market even more saturated. There has been a lot of "compete against yourselves" this season-- completely understandable during Covid times, but it's also partly a result of there being too many competitions to choose from. At least some events have been combining D1 and D2 divisions to generate some competition. There are way too many divisions but that's an entirely different story.
Absolutely! We often have “local” comps to preview our routines/before nationals but those can still be an hour or so away and take all day. So throwing this in the mix in place of 1 or 2 of those or even in addition works for me!I feel like this may need to become a permanent thing in cheer. I like it.
I coached HS for awhile and I would have loved to be able to put a routine in front of judges BEFORE we actually traveled to an event.
I also feel like this would be great for prep, limited travel, novice, half year, etc.
Your kids can compete multiple times without making parents feel like they're teetering on full on all star travel territory. (Which I've seen people say on here that it happens.) Keeps the experience reasonable but still fun.
I'm sure having pre-recorded videos helps it run on time, but I agree, I've enjoyed it.I actually really like this whole cheer match live stream. It’s well run and on time.
I wonder when the coaches receive scoresheets after submitting a video? They said during the broadcast that judges review it a few times/spend time with it which I also find interesting. I also really enjoy the idea of watching something during the week, I mean it doesn't have to air on the weekend, lol. I continue to be so impressed with teams overcoming challenges etc this year. So far BSB is my pick for "grand". I also always love Swoosh, they weren't perfect but there is something fun about them.
Question, how many floors does Cheer Athletics have? It looks enormous!
Wow, that is impressive. Would be tough to find that space in NNJ I imagine! We have one of those gyms where nothing else can be going on if a team is filming so it is more of a challenge scheduling/timing filming than I would have thought going into the season.CA Plano has 6 "main" oversized spring floors and an additional non-spring-floor full mat in another room. (Technically, there is just 1 giant spring floor with different color mats making 6+ performance areas.)
Agree... here in Ct the gym has great overall space for multiple floors but ceilings could definitely be higher! One for not 100 % perfect filming...But it works!Wow, that is impressive.
