Re: the unattended child issue.
I was at a very large soccer tournament this weekend, one of the kind that is at a complex of sorts with multiple games going on multiple fields. It always concerns me to see how far folks are willing to let their kids go distance-wise without them. See also: I am additionally more concerned when folks think that allowing a kid to roam with another slightly older kid is somehow safer. Ex: first grader is totally safe to go to other field that is almost a football field away if 3rd grade sister goes with.
My nieces are older now, but were always super mad when they were little and competing in pageants (with me at times as chaperone/adult if mom was working that first night), because no, a 5 and a 8-year-old are not going to the pool together without an adult, even if a third older kid says then can go with. No, I don't care if Becky Sue's mom always lets her go down by herself or with another little friend. Oh, 11 year old friend said she'd go with you both? Still no. Another kid who is not that much older than you, is not going to know what to do if something happens to you in the pool. I'm not putting that responsibility on them.
