Okay, so I've done all-stars for 13 years, and this season was my last season because I'm graduating. However, after doing all stars so long, I don't want to give it up. I really want to start coaching, but I don't know where to start since I don't have much to put on my résumé besides the fact that I've done all stars for 13 years! I don't want to coach tumbling because I had a surgery that made me incapable if ever being able to tumble. Anyone have any advice?

Start at the gym you cheered at. At least talk to the owner about it. That's how I started. First I just coached tumbling, then got partial season teams, and worked my way up to youth 3! I am retired now, but it will build your resume for sure if you can get in there. :)

Thanks! That's a good idea! I just hope my coach (ex-coach now I guess?) is willing to let me try! :)

That's your best foot in the door! (unless you face planted and dropped a stunt every competition :p)

Haha! No! Thank goodness! I think that only happened once, and it was NCA Nats Day 2 last year. We all just call it "the Incident" these days.

Actually at the gym my daughter cheered for, they did hire the girl that dropped every single competition and wouldn't even look at anyone else. You're lucky you were at a gym that was supportive of you!

I had several experianced seniors assist the coaches for a year. that way they could feel what it's like to be coaching, because after all being a teammember is totally different from being a coach.
also this way they get some experiance and dont need to worry that they dont know what they are doing because they are not alone.
ask your gymowner or coach if there is a possibilty to do it this way too.
i currently have two seniors that really like coaching and they will be coaching the juniorteam all independant next season and assist with the seniors.
this whole past season they were coaching the juniors with me and each week they had to do one part of practice by themselves (leading warm up or stretching or tumbling). before practice they'd show me their practice scedule and after id give advice on how to do it better.
slowly i gave them more and more chances to lead the whole practice.

I absolutely agree with starting at the gym you've been with. Also, be willing (and possibly volunteer) to help with the little ones. If you can coach them, you can coach any age group.

Make sure you do a lot of listening at the first couple of practices. Being on the other side is very different. You're going to want to get a feel for how they coach, interact with kids and parents ect.

Good luck!

Thank you! I appreciate the advice from everyone! It makes me feel more confident in wanting to be a coach! :)
