She may be using her upper body and legs to compensate for a weaker core. How is her tumbling? My CP has a very strong upper body, strong legs and weak core but she's one of the strongest bases on the team. How is that even possible?
Anyone have any suggestions for some effective core work?
Not sure if they have a program like this where you are, but here there is a place called Cheer 360 where they work with cheerleaders on strengthening all different muscle groups:That's how I found out her core was weak. She's having problems with consistency. One minute she's got it the next she can't land it. @Kris gave me the idea of core strength. We tested it last night and sure enough she has core strength issues.
Her level 3 skills are good. When she gets to consistently landing a standing tuck and her layout shape that's where her problem starts
Yep. We require all of our competition dancers and anyone in Ballet IIIB (about 6th year) and higher to take pilates. They hate it lol.Dancers take Pilates to strengthen their core. It's a killer work out and I would definitely recommend that over trying to do exercises at home.
I think the class usually lasts 45 minutes to an hour, but don't quote me on that. You can probably find a DVD to buy. I wouldn't do it every day...maybe 3 times a week? How often/how long should you do Pilates?

It's new this year for us. The director was trying to add acro to some of our competition pieces, and our girls had zero tumbling or acro abilities. We started them in pilates and acro classes in July. All 21 of them now have back walkovers (I know, not a huge tumbling skill, but considering we had zero as of June...) And 11 of them now have aerials.
Our acro teacher takes all the credit - but I really think it's the pilates.

Yes. Check local dance places as well - I think they all have pilates classes now. But yes, I have dvd's at home that I do that are very effective. Also, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc have them for free if you have an account.I'm havin a hard time trying to find a class that's convenient with her schedule. Do you think the DVD is just as good?
My daughter has been training at an athelete performance center 2x a week for the past 3 years. They have her in a group with various atheletes doing various sports. They have her do sports specific exercises as well. In her case that is building ankle and knee muscles for injury prevention.
It has been a great experirnce and has helped her in all aspects of cheer especially tumbling and stamina.
We schedule her sessions at our convienence.
