Our cheer gym will be closed Dec. 22 - Jan. 6. It can seem like a long break. I told my 2 CP's they have to keep stretching over the break, but they don't need to worry about conditioning. When your gym closes do you rest or make time to work out on your own? If so, what do you do over the break?

I usually just stretched and didn't really condition over breaks when I cheered... I always really regretted that once practice started up again. It's surprising what taking two weeks off can do to you.

Usually even if my gym is closed there is still someone doing private lessons. More times then less I spend more time at the gym during 'closures' then I do when it's open.

I always end up going to tumble or workout over breaks. It's a good time to really focus on yourself because there are no team practices. Often I lose some technique when focusing on fitting everything into a routine for comp season. I use breaks as an opportunity to go through the skills I need in the routine and clean them up, focusing on technique and basics.

From a purely physical standpoint, especially kids, bodies need time to rest and recover. In my training (certified personal trainer), we were taught to do 3 weeks on, 1 week off. The problem with that is you have to know yourself. If that week off makes it almost impossible for you to start up again, maybe you should do more like 3 days. With cheer being year round, I usually have cp rest for those breaks and have her do lots of stretching and foam rolling during them. If she starts to get antsy, we might do a camp or something. Rest is really good/important, but not so much that you get out of shape. You wouldn't want to spend the week off laying in bed with a bag of chips, but use the time to focus on eating healthy and doing light physical activity. If the scheduled break was more than a week, I would definitely be conditioning during. A couple of weeks off does make a difference in your stamina.

We find open floor space wherever we can. Ours close for two weeks too, so no matter what gym has something going on, if its open to anyone....we're there.

During breaks I usually end up taking privates at a gymnastics gym, because I hate taking time off. I feel like I lose skills so I try to find somewhere to tumble when the gym is closed

I always stretch, go on the treadmill sometimes, and do a few ab workouts here and there. Jumps are always super hard when I go back after break so I do some at home lol

I am going to google foam rolling!

Exactly. Especially when your return from break leaves you only 4 practices before you start Nationals season.

I must be too competitive for my own good, but it doesn't seem like that kind of time off, with that kind of looming schedule, is a good thing. We'll have about 20% of our kids condition, tumble or find other resources over the break. But, the rest will just....well, break.

Happens every year and that first practice back kids are sucking wind, big time.

Our gym isn't open over the break. And, they don't really like you working out at different gyms. I guess my 2 cp's could do some regular conditioning like sit ups, push ups, etc. At the same time, if their bodies need to rest I want them to rest. Maybe, the first week rest, then some conditioning the rest of the break.

I sometimes condition, a lot of stretching, other than that nothing.

check around for a class in your area -- you will learn great technique! We offer them at the fitness studio I teach at but you may also find them offered by massage therapists.

See, here's my take on that...if they're not going to make any options available, then ill find my own. If they don't want us tumbling somewhere else that's cool...give us the opportunity to tumble there. Just because they want a break doesn't mean my kids do.

Harsh probably, but that's how we feel about it.
