I know personally I have to spot and know where I am while twisting, however my tumbling is more gymnastics like than cheer. I was just curious for all those that do twist are your eyes closed, do you have them open but just don't know where you are and feel it out etc... I just think its crazy hearing so many cheerleaders say they don't know where they are when they tumble. I couldn't do it.

When I full, I dont think I close my eyes, but Im with Kickdblcj on this one. I dont really know where I am like... rotation wise. I can, however, tell how far I am from the ground usually. Then again, I am not doing my fulls by myself yet, so I could be doing something weird.

Open. Deffinately always open. If they weren't, I would probably knock out anyone and everyone in a 5 foot radius.

Open eyes always. You may not be able to see everything clearly but eventually you will get the body awareness (hopefully) and have an idea of what your body needs to do when (I.e. stop spinning, toe pull, tell where the ground is).

Always open!!! And ya I spot especially when bounding out of a full or double but I do 1 1/2s completely by feeling

Coach......"Little bit why do your eyes looked closed in your pictures?"

L.B........."Because they are."

Coach......."New rule! Always tumble with your eyes open"

She was like 9/10 then. Funny I remember that.

So Ive always tumbled with my eyes closed, and when I tried to do a standing tuck on the tramp with my eyes open, I nearly broke my neck and back. My whole back was strained/sprained for about a week and a half. So now I still tumble with my eyes closed but open them after Ive rotated upside down/about to land. My coach still tells me to open my eyes, when to me there open, only at the end. I'm terrified to keep them open the whole time, bad memories, and to many flashbacks. This is probably why I only have standing and running bhs. I could have my tuck but I won't open my eyes to spot where I land, which cause my landing to look a hot mess. I said to myself your 5'10, your a stunter not a tumbler and a bhs is my max, maybe standing tuck. Backspot for life!!!

I recommend to start small, keep your eyes open in Round offs, try to spot your entry and exit, then move to backhandsprings, again spotting your entry and exit. Eventually you will become comfortable enough with it to open your eyes in all of your tumbling. Having your eyes open is essential to controlling your tumbling and completing harder skills safely.

Thank you, I shall give it a try at practice today. Only with the round off, safety first. :)

I don't know if I do. I never see anything when I twist but if I do ever see anything I freak out. I have good body awareness because of gymnastics so I don't ever try tumble with my eyes open.
