All-Star Going Over Scoresheets With Team After Competing

I always go over our scoresheets with the girls and if the parents aren't there I leave them out at the next practice so that they can see all the comments.
I don't just read the scoresheets out as its the understanding of what is said that is important. At our last competition we got a deduction with our level 3 seniors as the judge said inversions where illegal at level 3! I went over with the girls and parents why this wasn't true and even showed them the stunt in the level 3 section of the credentialing book. They where annoyed about this especially as they where only 5 points off 1st and they where worried the other judges may have penalised them for this. It is also a good time to get their feedback and the more they can understand how the scoring has worked the better I feel they will be.
As for coaches not letting parents in on the meetings and feedback I believe this would be a bad idea. We can educate the athletes all we want however if they are then going home and listening to their parents telling them some other nonsense it is counter productive. I also thinks it can make parents suspicious and if my son was on a team that I wasn't allowed to know the judges feedback I would wonder why and what the coaches where trying to hide.
Openness can only help build a happy and successful gym.

Well said, especially that part:)

sometimes. lets not go too far with that! i still think closed practices are the best thing to happen to me!

I also go over scoresheets before the competition.
Especially the deduction sheet.
It helps the kids understand the reason for change, or why we can or can't, afford to take a risk that week.

When we go over the "game plan" and then go over the "results"- or the scoresheets. It makes us feel more like a team. Like we have a plan...we are in it together..and we are all striving towards a common goal. Then we sit around and read the scoresheets and see how we did.

My cp has said that her coaches go over their scoresheet and she'll tell me what they scored where, our parents are pretty savvy on the scoresheets and know when our girls have gotten a deduction. I do think that it would help the new cheer parents understand better if the scoresheets were made available for them to see. This year many of our parents were confused as to why if our girls hit clean on Day 1, why they would still be behind a team that may have had bobbles or a fall. It took me 3 years to figure out that part!

my coaches always go over the scoresheet, sometimes briefly if it was a good weekend. or more in detail when we didn't hit so great. i think it really helps to understand and know what we need to fix, as an athlete.

Same here, I love having a plan.... call it OCD if you want, or maybe it's just how I learned when I first started, but I prefer having a plan for all of my practices too. I plan all of my practices basically to the minute, making sure that I cover everything I need to each week:)

Very similar to you, Num1Stunta, our gym always reviews score sheets. It's very helpful to me, because it tells me what I need to focus on the next time I compete. With the exception of our mishap on Day2 of Cheersport Nationals, we used what our coahces told us at the end of Day1 and made sure we fixed it for Day2. I find it very useful. :)

Oh there is no way I'd have parents at practice, and to be honest most if my parents would hate to stay. I have a 5 minute window at the start and end of class where they can come in and speak to me, pay fees that type of stuff and if we are going over scoresheets I let them know when they drop their kids off and they can stay for that. If the parents where in another room and could watch from a window it would be ok but the facility that houses our floor just has the floor in it so if they where to stay it would just be on the benches at the side of the floor so there's no way thats happening. Apart from distracting the girls they make far to much noise

We always go over the scoresheets and I find it soo helpful. I think that the coaches can say 100 times point your toes and you usually just let it go in one ear and out the other. when a judge says it, it sinks it alot better.
