I've noticed lately that my gym's having a few people from other gyms coming to our tumbling classes. Considering we're a small gym, and one of the girls has a double and is on CEA coed elite...does this happen at your gyms?

Yea, it happens a lot! I personally used to take tumble with a coach at a gymnastics gym and I know a coach at my gym does privates with a girl on Raleigh SSX. It seems weird, but I guess its common.

I know we have a few girls from cheer athletics come to my gym to take privates! I don't think our gym owner or CA has a problem with it!

We have girls that drive an hour or more to practice 2x a week, so for tumbling extra they go to Open Gyms where they live or take a class. I think it is probably more common than not for those athletes that drive to do All Stars.

I think that's pretty common, especially with commuting issues for higher level athletes. The only time I have a real issue with it is if your coach isn't down with it. For instance, if you're taking privates at another gym because your coaches don't think youve perfected technique enough to progress yet...so you go to another gym for privates where they'll let you work on that skill your coaches don't think you're ready for yet.

That's when I think it's not cool. Especially when doing that very thing ends up getting you hurt because your coaches were right.

I think this is a common practice for multiple reasons.

-there are the kids that commute to their "home" gyms and just want to tumble. sometimes its just not possible for mom/dad/the wallet to drive long distances 5/6 days a week.

-some kids do it for a specific coach. maybe their tumbling coach switched gyms or they did. or sometimes a different perspective helps you, so they seek a new tumbling coach.

-it may be cheaper to tumble at a smaller gym.

-it's also that time of year where athletes are checking out other gyms. (Maybe not the CEA girl in your example, though) but it's the end of one season and we're approaching tryout season, and it's always a good idea to attend tumbling/open gyms in all of your perspective choices.

It's more common than you think. As long as coaches on both sides of it are okay with it. I do know there are some gyms that absolutely do not allow it.

Just as others have said, it depends on the reason you're doing it, and whether the coaches are okay with it. We do it because of location and also the convenience of the tumbling times. As working parents, convenience can mean a lot! We do some privates at our gym, which are great, but they do get rather expensive, and the extra practice at the other gym is a lot more economical for us. The coaches at both gyms know who we are and what we are doing, so it has worked out well. I think that just as long as everyone is on the same page and there is "perfection before progression", it is okay.
