All-Star Great Article About Real Life Consequences For Social Media Choices

Many college coaches are now imposing bans on their athletes for twitter (or other social media sites) during the season. A lot of kids dedicate their lives to their sport and obviously tensions run high after a big loss or big win, just like in cheerleading. It's really easy to say something you regret. A lot of players that aren't restricted by coaches self-impose a ban to help keep their focus while in season.

My HS bball team is really good, ranks in the Washington Post (we are from the area). The players seldom tweet during the season, barely do they party, and they don't date. They are one of the most successful teams at the school and I'm sure the discipline plays a role.

Unfortunately because the way some athletes r treated they feel like they r better than everyone else! They do not think past the next game! What are they going to do with their lives when they cannot be THE athlete? They are given the grade, not earning the grade sometimes. The GPA that is required to play is disgraceful sometimes. Some athletes, and young adults just need to grow up and think about their future.

What I noticed from my (small, Division 1) college was that the athletes who weren't that good were the ones who made the biggest deal online about being an athlete. One hockey player called himself an "athlete-student" in his twitter bio...and considering he played in five total games over four years, he wasn't really much of either.

Probably because they actually had the time to. #benchwarmer LOL

Here's another thing to look out for...tagging. A friend's daughter just lost part of a HS scholarship because of photos that she was tagged in on IG. She's friends with the son of someone on the scholarship board. While she didn't post any questionable photos, she was tagged in quite a few. I don't know exactly what the photos were of, but it really stinks because her family lost a good chunk of $$.

That's stupid. I've been tagged in spam on Facebook before, is that what happened to her?

No, they were parties that she attended. My guess is that she wasn't being a good girl. The scholarship was tied to character traits, so in this case I can see the reasoning behind pulling the $$$. Still stinks.

Even if she WAS, she was still at that party. They can't prove she was misbehaving, but they also can't prove she was behaving, and why risk it?

I tell this story all the time: my mother worked for a scholarship org based out of my town for HS'ers. It revolved around our town's harvest festival each year. One year, a BUNCH of students (many of whom were various athletes) got caught at a party, including 2 of the girls in the program. Didn't matter that they were both sober, they were there. One of them ended up losing the 'Crown' (they had a banquet at the end of the year where they crowned the Festival Queen/King), because of that one specific incident. She was a front-runner by miles, but because of that one night, she lost the scholarship.
