I live in NJ and for school cheer this season we wore it all up, although there were other teams that wore it half up half down. It really depends on what area your from and which competitions you go to, and my team only went to a few locals where the rules weren't too strict. So I would just check with what competitions your attending :)

I have to say, I took over a HS team last year, and a lot of times when I would suggest something, the girls would say "I thought that was illegal" (when it was something that wasn't) and I would explain that it was legal. Turns out the old coaches used to tell the girls something was illegal when they didn't want to deal with the argument...lol! Smart coaches!

So it is totally a legit question to be asking! :)

Yes! It's an NFHS rule, so it should be illegal in all states. However, time and time again, I see it on the competition floor- which makes it very hard to explain to my team, who'd love to wear their hair half up. Smaller, local competitions ought to follow ALL the rules, and make everyone accountable for following them as well- they're there for a reason!

Its 100% illegal in Maine to wear it half up half down, unless it is above your shoulders. No one even bothers to contest the rule...Maybe our coaches are just educated well by the board, but were someone to break the rule in an obvious manner, they would certainly be called out and no one must find it worth the risk I guess...Maine is kind of a small state though, so maybe that makes it easier to police the rules?...
