All-Star How To Choose A State For A Year Abroad

I'm going to spend a year abroad in 2012 and i have to choose a University/College right now ..as i am obsessed with Cheerleading my biggest dream would be to join an Allstar Team while staying in the US. That's a huge point for me to choose the State/University i'm gonna apply for ( kinda crazy huh?) ;) I'm very flexible concerning the University aswell because of my subjects
So what would you recommend? I'd definitly be a candidate for the International Division concerning age,and my Team over here is Level 6 ...unfortunately my Tumbling is non-existent :( But i'd be happy about any opportunity so i'd take what i'd get :)
Any recommendations?I am very open minded state-wise ;)

does your program youre going through have a select number of colleges that you can attend? or can you attend any college that you want?

I can attendany college i want because it's just about spending the year in an englishspeaking country and the scholarship company is only interested in the Name of the College/University and the tuition fees

You might want to think about what weather you'd want to live in then choose schools/gyms haha.

haha well a coastal state would be cool i guess but it's not a must as long as it's not alaska and as long as its not raining/snowing half of the year :D

There are good schools in Kentucky (University of Kentucky and University of Louisville) both good teams and each of the schools have allstar programs close by (Kentucky Elite and Gymtyme).

If you don't like bad weather. i would stay in the south east or south west.
California, texas, florida/georgia and anything in between.

If tumbling is an issue, i would recommend contacting a program(college or allstar) before making a decision of where you are going.

yeah definitly, if i'm not going to find a program which would let me join even if i can't tumble i'm definitly going to apply for California or Florida first hand :) My scholarship application is due in September that's why i'm starting to collect some Information now

When are you actually going to be here?
The united states seems to have different competing seasons than europe also.

We usually have tryouts in May (some open teams have tryouts throughout the summer and into september). Then we usually compete from november/Decemeber/January until April (usually worlds is the last competition for most Senior 5 and Open 5/6 teams)

Oh Ok. so when you come, youd be coming in the middle of a season because you would start in January/February of 2012. (2011-2012). Most places have tryouts in April or May of 2012 for the 2012-2013 season.

As far as Florida goes I'd recommend USF, FIU, and FAU.
USF is in Tampa so Brandon Allstars would definitely be an option (IOC5). USF has a coed and all girl squad.
FIU in Miami. Top Gun (IOC5 and IOC6) FIU has a coed team that goes to NCA college nationals.
FAU is in Boca Raton. It'd be a good drive to TG or Brandon but I know some kids are doing it. I know they're building up their college team and I think quite a few Brandon alum are going there so they should be a good up and coming team.
UCF is in Orlando but it's pretty difficult to make their team. There are a couple of open teams in the Orlando area though.

My University also offers a scholarship for UCF, i'm gonna apply for that one too just in case ..

I'll most probably have no chance to make any college Team so i was hoping for some gym with an open Team, doesn't have to be a Team that attends Worlds, i just wanna cheer :)

georgia has a good number of options. In the atlanta area, there's stingrays, georgia all stars, atl all stars, ge heat all stars, all star panthers, force all stars, atlanta jayhawks, and more. i know stingrays and georgia have international/open level 6 teams, but im not sure if/when the others will have them. As for schools, there's kennesaw state, georgia state, georgia tech (if youre smart/are interested in engineering), and university of georgia is about an hour outside of atlanta. Rays would be your best bet for an international team, but im not sure what would happen if you dont have any tumbling. good luck! i think wherever you pick will be an awesome experience!
