Choosing a college to attend is always a stressful time. Sometimes you get to college for move in day and wonder, “did I make the right choice?” Luckily, cheerleading camp can serve as your official visit, and gives the full college experience. While at camp, you sleep in the dorms, eat at the dining hall, walk around campus, and get to use the facilities for cheer camp during the day. This gives great insight to everyday college life, and paints a realistic picture as to what attending that school would be like.
I wish I had attended camp at a university while in high school. When I got to college, it was a whole new experience for me, and I later realized that the college I had chosen was not the right fit for me. If I had attended cheer camp there, I would have had a better understanding of what that university was like, rather than just taking an hour long tour. Use your camp experience as your official visit. If you are interested in cheering at that particular school, this is the perfect opportunity to meet the coach, find out what practices are like, where you would be practicing, etc. If you don’t love practicing there for camp, just imagine dedicating your entire college career to practicing there. Who knows, maybe some of the staff working that camp are cheerleaders there! Put yourself in the shoes of a cheerleader at that school and examine if that program is right for you. It will save you time, credit hours, and money in the long run if you do your research before you set foot on campus for your first day of classes. Don’t wait until it is too late – start researching today!
