All-Star Maryland Marlins Merging With Maryland Twisters

Did you find the programs very different? Some Marlins are afraid they'll lose the family atmosphere.

I think just because it's bigger doesn't mean you lose that family atmosphere. You just gain a bigger family.

I never considered this as a "merger". There is still only 1 owner. Why did Marlins parents have to pay $65 for an "evaluation" after they were told to come and take a "tour" of they gym? 160 kids x $65 = $10,400. I did hear that there is no water fountain in the gym but they sell water in the snack room. If you can make $10K in a few hours, I think you could get a water fountain for these kids. But wait, then you might not make as much money off of the water that is for sale in the snack room. $65 is a lot to tryout for a team that you have no guarantee of staying on. Also if you were on a worlds team before the "merger" and they were keeping it together, why the $65? I have a feeling after the parent agreements are signed a lot of kids will be moved around. I don't think this is fair for the kids and their self esteem or confidence. Put them on the right team the first time. I can understand an evaluation later in the season if everyone is clear about the possibility of being moved for losing a skill, but an evaluation just after tryouts or just after parent agreements are turned in?

People chose Marlins for a reason and I think it's really sad that the owner did not say something sooner. I believe the parents of the Marlins gym would have helped save the gym from the "merger". It will be interesting to see how many people change gyms next year.

As far as the coaches go - none of them had any warning. If you came to work and lost your job, wouldn't you go and get another job? If this particular coach is so bad, why are his athletes so talented? Why is he the highest paid coach at these gyms? And why do people keep hiring him?

I myself am very saddened with how people are treating each other over this. Nobody signed a paper saying they had to go to a certain gym if there were to be a "merger". Why can't we respect each others decision and let people know that there are options before signing a parent agreement. Your still going to see your friends at competitions. Wouldn't it be more fun to run up and give each other a hug instead of dirty looks and avoiding each other. It's just cheerleading. I don't have a problem with anyones decision and I will be giving you a hug when I see you. Good luck to everyone involved.

True. But the split between the gym to pay for space and overhead to run the privates - if there is one - is not always public knowledge, which definitely offsets the true amount the tumbling coaches truly makes.

I complety agree. Even the Marlins parents who are staying at Twisters laugh every time the word "merger" is used.

Merger "sounds" better to parents, athletes, and fans and is more positive sounding than "sold, bought out, or taken over."

Marlins is transferring $100 to Twisters to offset costs. The parents were told right away it was not a surprise fee.

Every athlete that tries out has to pay an evaluation fee, period. If you are a returning athlete you had to pay an evaluation fee, albeit it is slightly cheaper than the $65 fee which is for all new athletes. EVERY athlete in the program had to pay the fee so once again it was not a secret and/or hidden fee. I cannot speak about our water fountain'less facility but thankfully there are kind companies out there like Gatorade, Fiji, Deer Park, etc. who have come to our aid and sell these bottles filled with clear liquid at a plethora of locations (gas stations, grocery stores, New Hampshire Ave). Clearly I'm being facetious but we are not trying to "get" anyone in this process. Some kids think Twisters is a great fit and others have chose to go elsewhere. I kind of feel like people are grasping at straws...

I like that to the Twisters camp this is such a non factor. I like how the Twisters camp does not respond to any of Juba's attempts to tarnish their image. He just keeps talking and talking. The parents were not told at the "merger" announcement of the $65 fee. The $100 being transferred is to help offset the costs for the travel teams. It has nothing to do with the evaluation/tryout, whatever fee. My point, or rather opinion, is that I don't feel people are being upfront from the start.

As far as the coaches go, I know for a fact that not all of them had warning and I think is was kind of a crappy thing to do.

well as mentioned earlier, all athletes new, old, or otherwise have to pay an evaluation fee. at the end of the day this is a business and we have to be fair to all of our customers, both new and old. if the evaluation fee was a determining factor in someone going elsewhere they certainly have the right to do so.
