Hi! so I started cheerleading 4 seasons ago at my current, new(kinda), small, gym. I'm basically a level 4 but I'm very close to being a level 5. My current gym only offers level one and two. without trying to sound conceited, I am honestly the best stunter and tumbler at the gym. The area I live in also doesn't have great high school cheerleading programs. My request is to convince my parents to let me move 3 hours away for my senior year so I can be a part of a large, well known gym(with possibility of being on worlds team) and I could also compete with the high school state champion cheer team. This would be very hard for me because I have been such a huge part of my gym for so long but i feel like I am only being pushed when I'm doing privates, i also feel like moving to a better program would help me for college cheer. please tell me what you think! thank you!!

I know you would be moving your senior year to a larger gym do you mean staying with a host family or living by yourself? Or are you talking about just moving gyms but staying where you are at now and doing the 3hr commute!?

Anyways I know you said you are a level 4 almost level 5. Most big gyms with worlds teams have restricted teams as well. Even if they don't if they are a large gym (like stingrays) or something I would assume you need solid level 5 skills and more than just a running full ...to be placed on one of their highly competitive world teams.

Do you only want to move if you make a worlds team only or if they put you on a 4 or restricted 5 you would be ok?

The same goes for Cali. We have a restricted Level5, but to make that team you have to have solid level 5 skills. They consider a skill to be solid if it can be done "near perfect" 10/10 times. You really need to have the skills to make the higher level teams at the big gyms.

I personally wouldn't have considered moving for cheer – my school, other co-curriculars, friends and family were all too important to me. BUT that's just me, and I know many people for whom moving thousands of miles away would be an easy decision if it meant they could have more cheer opportunities.

Have a really big think about the pros and cons. You're nearly in your senior year so consider whether moving during this busy and important time would be feasible. Think about your friends, your family, your school and anything else tying you to your area. Think about the financial implications, as living away from home is expensive. And also think, like others have said, about whether your level 5 skills are solid, and thus whether you would be on a L5, restricted, L4 or even L3 team. Would you still want to move away if they placed you on a L4 team? Would be comfortable living with a host family? Do you know anyone in that area? Would you be okay to move to a new home and new school where you don't know anyone? Would you have a support network if it gets difficult? Not trying to overwhelm you, but these are all important considerations, especially since you're still young.

Weigh up the difficulties of moving away, which are honestly numerous, with the opportunities that you might gain from this, which also seem very important to you.

Kris10boo and Mo' Bettah kind of hit it on the head.

Are you only trying to do this to be on a L5 Worlds team? If so, what happens if you don't have the skills to make one at the big gym?

it's not so much the level 5 team(although that would be great) i would just like to be at a more organized program and yes I would be fine with being on level 4 or restricted 5. the deal I discussed with my mom was for her and I to rent an apartment up there while my dad stays here to run the business. I just feel as though I'm not progressing at all being on a level two team.

also, the high school I would attend there has much better education and better classes and an environment that I would seem to fit in with well. I live in a very poverty-driven town

Is commuting just for practice each week an option?

It sounds like you would be taking on a lot of changes - new school for your senior year, new gym, and you'd like to cheer for school as well? I don't know if I would recommend taking on so much all at once, or if it is even possible to do all. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide.

Is there anything closer than 3 hours away that would have a level 4/5 team? Maybe something an hour or 1.5 hours away that would be a tolerable drive?

Are you thinking of asking your parents to let you live in a situation by yourself (like w/ a host family) or are you thinking they'd relocate too? Have you said anything at all to them about this up to this point?

yes, actually it was my dads idea. the idea was for me and my mom to move there. its not completely 3 hours. its more like 2.5. yes there is one gym close but I am not a fan of that gym and I have no desire to attend it. I personally think it would be easier to move if I'm on the high school cheer team, since Id already know people.

Are you planning on going to college? Cheering after all star? Here's the thing...you're only one year away from moving on with your life. If you're planning on going to college after graduating and want to try out for the cheer team there, you only have one year until you can do so without disrupting the normal flow of life.

Personally, I think that moving for cheerleading is stupid, but that's JMO. At the end of the day it's just an extracurricular activity, no matter how passionate we all are about it. I can't fathom separating my family and relocating away from everything I know during one of the most exciting years of my childhood--senior year of HS.

Certainly sit down and consider how moving will impact everything OUTSIDE of cheerleading. It sounds like you'd be in a great place cheer-wise, but what about friends? Schoolwork? College applications? Family?

Do you know when the high school cheer team's tryouts are? How competitive are the tryouts?

not positive when the tryouts are. I assume they are rather competitive but I have all the skills they performed at state and I'd be a senior and there's a rule that seniors have to be varsity so I think I'd be okay.
