Hey guys!
I've cheered since I was 4 (I'm now 16). I did rec team but we barely competed. I then went to high school and our team was not very good. I was the only girl who actually tried and cared about cheer and was the only one who could tumble. So my mom is letting me do all stars this year!! (super excited) I had try outs and made senior level 4 and am practicing with senior level 5 too see if my stunting is good enough! I need some pointers for really anything (practices, comps, uniforms, coaches ect)
Thanks guys!!

NEVER miss practice unless the occasion counts for a grade.
Don't badmouth your team.
Follow all rules and respect your coaches!
Make sure you have a proper uniform fitting.
Be your best and strive to achieve your goals.

Just have fun, it all goes by so fast. I wish I could get my younger cheer years back :/ enjoy it!

on a different side from the other replies...
-ALWAYS wear black under garments under your uniform, unless you have some sort of special clear strap bra because your uniform is complicated.
-triple knot your bow to your hair...I absolutely cannot STAND it when someone's bow falls out!
-don't wear your comp shoes on asphalt. save them for comp season & wear old shoes throughout the season. a few practices before your first comp/exhibition, I would start breaking them in, but allstar teams usually don't wear nikes (those take ages to break in), and most other brands break in pretty quick.
-take your coaches criticism as construction-it can only make you better, and they will yell! (or at least all the coaches I've ever had do!)
-if you see a famous cheerleader at a comp, please don't stalk them. ask them for a picture and whatnot and leave them alone. I know it would be annoying to get chased at comps like I've seen MG get for years!
hope this all helps, and good luck! you'll love it.

Competitions:
  • Make a packing list. It sucks to get 3 states away and realize you only have one shoe or no bow.
  • If flying to a competition, always put your uni in a carry on in case your baggage gets lost.
  • Come completely dressed, uniform and shoes on, hair and make-up done. If it's cold/rainy, make sure you wear team warm-ups, not sweats or PJs
  • Keep your uniform on the entire competition until your awards ceremony is over. Unless you are a crossover who has to warm-up during awards, attend your awards ceremony. Don't just compete and then leave to go to the beach.
  • Don't tan the day before a competition. Cheerleading and sunburn don't mix
  • Your coach should never have to hunt you down at a competition, be at the agreed location 10 minutes early
  • Try to support the other teams from your gym (and any gym really) while at comp. Check the schedule to see when the younger kids perform and go cheer for them. It really means a lot to have the big kids cheering them on, and it make you feel part of the program.
  • Take time to watch and appreciate cheerleading. You're at a National, take some time to sit and watch the teams. It lets you see other gym's style and increases your appreciation for the sport we share.
