What do y'all think about getting a brand new car for your 16th birthday?

I'm torn - on one hand, if people have money like that, and they live in an area where having cars in high school is the norm... I'm OK with it. I'd love to be all eye rolly about it, but I know if I had the money I'd buy my kids cars at 16 - and if I could, I'd probably buy them the newest I could get.

Side note this is purely hypothetical for me - cp is about to turn 20 and doesn't know how to drive or have a license, so no car for her! And I don't even have a car, so she sure isn't getting one before I do!

I'm 21 and I am still terrified to drive a brand new car. It blows my mind to see a 16 year old casually driving a brand new BMW.

I think it depends on the person and the vehicle. I drove my moms new Nissan sentra at 16. I bought a brand new cobalt when I was 17 and then when I was 21I bought a Nissan rogue. I had one accident with the sentra due to weather and then another in my rogue but I was hit from behind by someone texting on their phone.

Not everyone is irresponsible...just have to be careful that's all.

Most kids around here have cars, but close to none of them are new. It's shocking that she's 20 and doesn't have a license! Most kids around here (me included) hightail it to the DMV on their 16th birthday!

I guess I just don't know how parents can justify spending that money on a car and not expect the child to at least make small monthly payments on it. I don't think it really prepares kids for the real world and how they won't have their parents to foot the bill on everything they buy.

My oldest CP is getting ready to turn 13. She just told me she wants a 4x4 truck when she turns 16. I told her you realize I can't afford to get you a vehicle and keep you in all star cheer. She looked shocked, but it appears she is not willing to give up all star cheer for a truck! I wonder if she will feel the same when she actually turns 16.

I think go for it. All of my friends had their own cars waiting for them to pass the test, a few were right off the lot. After I got my full license I drove my dads brand new dodge ram until the summer (got license in December) and then drove a 1 year old car until I smashed it. Oops.

Not that I'm irresponsible, it would just make me nervous. It still scares me to drive my parents cars since they are significantly nicer than mine lol. I just don't want something bad to happen, my fault or not (although I would prefer it not be my fault haha)

My 16 yo doesn't drive yet. She wants a Kia Soul which is a possibility. Probably won't be brand new though. I have 14 yo twins. One will be driving a bmw, but it is almost as old as she is.

I am not opposed to new cars. It just doesn't always turn out well.

Oh I should mentioned that I did pay for my own car when I got one other then the first few months when my mom and I shared...she never had a car because I always had it lol.

Fine with it. My parents got my sisters and I one to share when we got our license. Well technically it was a lease. I mean, it wasn't anything crazy, just a Honda Civic.

I was totally thrilled with the car they picked because if I had gotten my choice it would have been that same Honda Civic but in blue hahah

ETA: Also wasn't nervous about driving it because I only got one point off on my road test (which was total BS).

What do y'all think about getting a brand new car for your 16th birthday?

Not a good idea. For multiple reasons. First off, new cars are expensive and so is the insurance, especially insurance for a brand new, teenage driver. It's a big expense. Second, teens can be more prone to accidents, not always from dumb driving, but inexperience. And they'll be parking at high school where there are other inexperienced drivers. Like my friend was pulling out of a tight parking spot at school and wrecked the side of a teachers car. She felt awful and was crying and didn't know what to do, and her insurance went up and her parents got upset. And it was a total accident.
And coming from a young persons point of view, I'd be super paranoid that other people were going to damage my new car. Like a lady hit my parked car, and while it was being fixed I had a super nice, brand new rental car. I was so nervous parking at college, I would park way out in the boonies because I didn't want someone to dink the doors or something.
Like unless the parents are paying for a new car and any expenses that result after, then sure! But I don't think a lot of parents will go for that. A car itself is a big, expensive responsibility, especially for a teenager. I have a used car I bought off of my parents when I went to college. I'm happy with it, it runs well and I won't be super upset if it gets a nick in it. But I'm also glad I have a job and can afford my insurance and tune-ups.

We don't drive here. We sold our car because it was racking up too many parking tickets because we never drove it anywhere!

We're moving next year, so my younger one will probably have her license as soon as she's old enough - and be begging for a car. We'll be back in the suburban life, so I'll have a car too. I'm kinda bummed about that part of moving - I despise driving, so I'm sad to move away from my beloved train!

The 20 year old's dorm, job, and classes are all in downtown Chicago. I don't even know what she'd do with a car!

2 things-
1. I forgot to add that I would LOVE to write for a big magazine like Cosmo or something and I'm not sure where you live to do that, but if it was NYC I would be living my dreams. (Basically I just want to be Carrie Bradshaw)

2. I got a 1996 Sunfire for graduation. A year later, I just got my licence this week and failed my test 2 times prior to this. I wouldn't want my parents to get me a brand new car, honestly. My car doesn't have AC and doesn't start really well, but it will be a lot easier on my mind kowing that if I wreck it (which unfortunately is very possible), it wasn't a huge dent in my dad's wallet.

Although, if we were rolling in cash, I don't see why a new car would be an issue. Plus, it's a lot safer for someone, especially a new driver to be in a new vehicle. My car is a little scary and with a new car, it would be nice to know that you have newer saftey technology.
