Does he get all of his information about the US off of Tumblr and Reddit? Please tell me he has visited more places in the US than just Times Square... It is not an accurate portrayal of any part of America except Times Square. (Though I guess you could argue it is a very accurate portrayal of the U.S. as a whole depending on what you're talking about. )

Times square isn't even an accurate depiction of times square. At least not anymore. Good or bad it's just basically an outdoor shopping mall now.

I live smack dab in the middle of syracuse and rochester and someone tried to live me i live in central NY... like if this is central where is upstate? Canada? [emoji14] my school has underground tunnels so it's more likely that individual professors cancel because most live a good distance away. we have about 3? inches right now but the roads are TERRIBLE. like i almost lost control in my 2 mile commute.

I will say NJ/NYCers may freak out about snow and act like the world is ending, but their snow removal/road treatment trumps everything up here. they don't know how good they have it. (it's also possible the road plowing up here sucks because it's "JUST" three inches and that's nothing they're not used to. idk, but jersey girl is still not used to it)

I really wouldn't say we freak out, as much as they really like to talk about it alot. It's soo annoying. (Born and raised on LI, BTW)

If you ask a person from NYC where upstate is and they'll tell you anything just north of the city.

To me Rochester and Buffalo are Western NY.

Binghamton is Southern and anything south of Albany in the Catskills are lost in the shuffle.

Actually this week, for some reason my cp asked me what/where was upstate and I said i was not even technically sure. I guess for us growing up, it was the catskills. The rest of New York is really so large. When you live "down here" you truly have no real concept of the rest of the state.

Haven't come across it in California except for just some basic stuff about the gold rush and the missions lumped in with other history classes. Definitely haven't seen whole classes specifically for it. It seems interesting, though.

My school doesn't have one, but the school in the next town over does. I can't imagine what would be in it. Quakers (I think[emoji16]), Abe Lincoln, the Chicago fire thing, a bunch of corrupt governors, and Obama? Illinois is kind of boring. Well, I guess it's antianticlimactic in terms of history

We had at least two years of Tennessee history. I feel like it was 4th grade and maybe 7th grade. Possibly more, but I know there were at least two. It wasn't just a history class where there was TN stuff thrown in either, it was a full book and year/semester of nothing but Tennessee.

We had history of Maine. It was an elective so I never took it.

We also had history through sports. That was a wicked cool class.

I think it's just relative to where you're from. Before I went to college in the Catskills, my views of "Upstate" were identical to @Cheerdad's. Basically the Adirondacks. Syracuse was "Central NY", then you have the "Southern Tier", "Western NY", "Capital Region". yada yada. Going to school in the Catskills, the locals told me that they considered themselves Central NY (even though I considered them in way too southern to be "Central", to me they were "Southern Tier" but they didn't see themselves that way) and everything above them was "Upstate". The people from LI and NYC thought basically everything above the island was "Upstate". When I tell people I'm from NY, I say Upstate (even though personally I don't think I'm "Upstate") because a lot of people just assume the entire state of NY is NYC. Basically what I've learned from this is that someone needs to draw up some definite boundaries so we all know what each other are talking about.

In middle school, I want to say, our history classes were tailored to specifically NY state history and geography. At least in my district it was. My college had a History/Geography of NY class and I think it might've been broken up into I and II (but don't quote me on that part). My friend took it and said the material is EXTENSIVE. NY has a lot of history to it but I guess that's what you get when you're the best state ;)
