I am a cheer coach who recently moved to a new city and started coaching at a very new gym. It's a beautiful place but its quite far from other places, and to go to any other cities, we would have to fly. I am wondering as I start to plan the 2026-2027 cheer season, if you had to take a flight to every competition you attended, how many competitions would you be open to attending? Obviously it is depedant on specific families, but we are lucky to live in a pretty affluent area so I am fairly confident it would not be a huge dealbreaker for new families. So I am just looking to get a general consensus of what would be "too much"- especially considering it would probably require the athletes to miss at least one day of school since we would fly out Friday. Another question would be if you would be comfortable sending your kids to a competition with say half the parents and you don't attend (i.e. each competition we take some chaperones and coaches but some parents stay behind) since this would probably be the next best option to save money and time off work. Anyway, I am aware this is a question best for the specific parents, but I want to get an idea of what people think is reasonable before I make a rough plan. Thanks :)

Flying generally required us to take the Friday before and Monday after since the finalized schedule didn't come out until the week of the comp. Being the school year is only 36 weeks, and many parents have 3 wks vacation, I would allow a max of 3 comps (flying) with the possibility of an end of year event being the 4th. Many families have more than 1 athlete so, depending on divisions, you can miss 4-5 days just with end of year events.

As far as taking half the parents, "no." In fact, if I were a gym owner, I would make it very clear in the contract a parent must be at each comp and they are responsible for their kid(s) at all times with the exception of being in the warm up room and comp floor. Making it less expensive or requiring less time taken off just to increase the number of comps, is not worth taking on that responsibility or liability as a gym owner, coach, or parent.
