I never really hear anyone talk about this rule anymore. Is it still in effect?

The only time I have heard it talked about recently was the confusion people had about it at worlds. People tweeting didn't know that it only counted as out of bounds if the person touched the green.

Have you also heard that if you take more than 3 steps after landing a pass (backwards) its considered a deduction... Yeah we found that out at worlds too.

Yeah it was interesting because not even our owner had heard of this rule before.

I've never heard that either. It makes me think you pulled up short on a skill though if I see it, so I guess I can understand why it's a rule. Coaches will argue to their death with judges about this sort of thing so I can totally see them making a rule about it to prevent the haggling that happens behind the scenes.

But to answer the original question... I think it needs clarification.

I've heard coaches tell kids that its ok to walk off the mat during running tumbling if you're in the back and you have to get to your spot. I was like huhhhhh what? In my book, outside of the lines has always been a no-no place, whether you mean it or not.

The rule is you must stay on the performing surface. The red cushion around the mats is still considered the performing surface. Stepping onto the concrete is a no no.

I know in the past there have been competitions that don't give deductions if you tumble out of bounds because it is a safety issue, and they dont want you to get hurt if you are close and fight to stay in? But if you purposely walk out, then that is illegal.

Can we have a universal rule about OOB? Is that so hard?

My team (Texas Lonestar large lmtd) at worlds on finals day we had a boy on our team not land his standing tumbling going to the side and he flew way off the mat onto the concrete :/ i wondered if and how much of a deduction we got for this.
