How often do you get breaks during your practice. Coaches, do you let your younger teams have more? Is going for over an hour without a break normal?

We usually got zero to two water breaks during a two hour practice... so I guess an hour without is normal? I think it must depend on the intensity of the practice - if you're marking stuff you're not going to need as many breaks as if you're going full out.

You know what's strange? I'll go an entire tumbling class/private/practice without a drink break, and then when I take classes/privates at gymnastics gyms they tell me to take a water break every like 10 minutes and I'm just like "I don't need one...." but they're used to more frequent water breaks I guess? I always thought that was interesting....

I'd say my team gets 1-2 water breaks per half hour and we have a 2 hour practice, so on average 4-5 per practice

So, practicing until you want to vomit is sort of normal? I admit that's not really what my orig. post was about (practice 'till you vomit-is maybe how I should have titled it). cp is 8yrs and the other night she told me she was ready to vomit after a hour and 1/2 without a break. They've had some pretty intense practices but this was the 1st time she said anything of that sort.

It depends. If the practice is particularly intense then they will break every 1/2 hour or so. Like the posters above, when cleaning routine or marking it may go for longer. Or sometimes I just plain FORGET! During a 3 hour practice I allow a 10 minute snack break in the middle.

I would inquire to your coach, in the most non-critical way possible, because to be honest it might just not be on their radar. Good luck!

IMHO, no. She's 8, she shouldn't feel that way after practice. Even if it's not a formal "water break" she should be getting some sort of break... I said "up to two" meaning water breaks, but we definitely had other times when we took kind of a breather, we just didn't go get a drink... What level and division is she?

Level 3 Jr. She has the same coach as last year when she was a Mini 1. Their is no mini team this year (their are three other girls on the team her age the team total is 12 and 3 of them (cp or the younger) cross over to the Y2 team which is even smaller). It is possible they had breather breaks, I didn't stay and watch this particular practice. But often they have in the past had breather moments. Also what does IMHO mean :)

This year she is on a jr3 team, last year mini1. They may have had some breather breaks, I didn't stay at this practice to watch. But I norm. stay and watch most or part of them, and at times I guess you could say they get breather moments. Husband did watch part of it, but he didn't tell me if they had breather moments, just no breaks. This is her 2nd year. Also what does IMHO mean?

Our practices are run normally with two teams practicing at the same time. We run the routines and alternate. While one team has the floor, the other gets a drink or has a break. That's usually just how we do things!

Am I one of the only people here who's really freaked out by things like having to "work for water"? I get you want to motivate your athletes, but I really disagree with denying a basic life essential until you see significant progress. Working out until you vomit or are about to vomit is just straight up dangerous.

My CP's have 2, 2 hour practices a week. Usually they'll get one water break in there about halfway, but sometimes when they're just working....we'll look at the clock and realize there's 15 minutes left and their gatorades are still sitting closed. It happens. We had a few get sick before, but not by design and I think that was more because the gym was hot with no air moving around than the fact they didn't get a water break.

I would definitely talk to the coaches if this happens every practice. It's not fair for a little kid or any kid for that matter to not have access to water and have it get to the point where they feel sick afterward... and it means in my honest opinion.

Actually the younger my teams the less breaks they get, stamina isn't as much of an issue in mini and youth kids -and some younger junior teams. I know my mini 2 gets maybe one or two 30 second - 1 minute water breaks over an hour and a half. Only exception is days where they run a lot of routines which is usually a competition warm up with a 5 minute break then 3 or 4 full outs each followed with a stamina routine of full out tumbling and any stunts they didn't hit, or full out tumbling and stunts for the groups that didnt hit with a two or three minute between the end of the second set of routines and the start of my next.
However if I tried this with my senior kids they would die so it all depends upon the team lol. It helps that I coach in a fully air conditioned gym so heat is hardly ever a concern
