Question About Girls Getting Kicked Off Team

I want opinions, two girls from our local cheer squad got kicked off the high school team a couple of weeks ago bc they climbed over their balcony to the balcony next to them. Granted this was 8 stories up (SCARY!!!). The cheer coach called the parents to come get them and said they could not perform at the competition. About 3 hours later she tells the girls they are off the squad. Also, a parent told the coach they did this (was told by her daughter). They both willingly admitted they did it when the coach asked them. So now they cannot try out again for another year, which seems severe for the act. I don't know though so I'm asking your opinion. They did not have any demerits before this.

I think my face turned white just reading this.

I think the coach was kind and gentle compared to what I would do to my daughter if she did something this reckless. First of all, if I ever let her out of her room again, she wouldn't be driving my car or any car. This action was definitely an indication that she didn't have the maturity or common sense boundaries necessary to make basic decisions that could translate into life or death choices behind the wheel. Now that's harsh! ;)

If I'm understanding this correctly, the girls climbed over hotel room balconies? If I were their coach, I would have called their parents to come get them. I wouldn't care how far away they were. If they needed to catch a flight down to Disney to get them-they'd need to do it. They would most definitely be off the team, and not permitted to try out again. I would also be reporting it to the Athletic Director and/or Principal so that a consequence for school trip behavior could also be taken care of. That kind of behavior is completely dangerous and unacceptable and are not the types of girls I would want representing my school/program.

A little more info, this trip had no chaperones. Just one coach for 16 girls and one of the girls was 14 (still old enough but not quite the maturity of a 16-17 year old). Another sticky situation was the coach left one of the girls unattended in the same room for a couple of hours while the parent was on the way to get her.

Now you're getting into two separate things. The coach dismissing the girls from the team was appropriate. It's up to the school to deal with the coach (opinions of parents and cheerleaders doesn't matter....that a school policy/HR matter).

And sadly the school is siding with the coach and saying she was in the right and she wasn't aware the girl was left unattended. But she was the adult in charge so I don't quite understand where she can't be in the wrong not knowing where her team was at all times.

If there is 1 coach and 16 girls, I would think that each of the cheerleaders would be unattended at some point. Were all 17 going to sleep in the same room? Doubtful.

I think this is a red herring and the school is doing the right thing.
