Thank you for posting this, very interessting! I always watch my bases to do the right technique to keep their backs healthy, but taking care of the flyers back health is important too.

I always tell cp to get low and use her legs! I see a lot of lower level kids sway backing stunts and it makes me hurt just watching. Cp practices her basing skills on her little sister and has gotten really good at avoiding putting her back in precarious positions.

From my personal experiences I can say that I'd rather my non-conceived future CP have a fierce scorpion than a fierce spike. Still being a flyer, I find it painful to pull a scorpion now because I stretched my back too much when I was younger to get a spike. :(

Just to add on, I really can't stress the importance of stretching both legs enough, especially for your scorpion, equally. When I was younger, I didn't stretch both legs and have now ended up with scoliosis.

I didn't stretch both legs. I have a needle and can't even pull a dorito on the other leg. I have a bulging herniated disc in my l4/l5 as a result of not stretching both legs the same and tumbling on hard surfaces (gym floor, dead mat) the herniation causes a lot of pain whenever I do simple things. If your back hurts, even just a little, I reccommend going to your doctor to get checked out because if you don't catch what's wrong really early it can cause a lot of damage. Thankfully I did, and it could be worse, but its still going to effect me for the rest of my life.

ETA: I should probably mention I'm not a base.

I have been an ex-cheerleader for like 3 years now.. was main base for 10 years. I still suffer with back pain and very tight muscles in my shoulders, back and legs. I will more than likely suffer with this for the rest of my life! It is so important to teach and watch how your bases are stunting! I wish my coach had noticed me.

I agree, it took my mom two years to realize that my back pain wasn't just an ache. It was an actual problem. Thank God that my problem is a mild one and not more severe, but not everybody will end up as lucky as I did. Please visit your doctor ASAP.

Same here girl! I guess two years isn't "quickly", but the pain didn't start until i started high school cheer, and doing level 5 skills as an allstar on spring floor didn't kill it as much as doing a standing tuck or a backhandspring on gym floor and dead mat.

hey i found this blog of a guy who writes about cheerleading and related issues and thought u guys might like it as it has helped me

Are you sure you found 'this blog of a guy'? From your username I'd guess you write it - or it's a strange coincidence that your username is the last name of this blog author.

Back problems are no joke.
I think for cheer back problems and concussions are the two most under-treated problems, which is crazy since your back and your brain are kinda the two most crucial things in your body..

I can't even count how many girls I've seen say "I have a concussion but its not THAT bad..." Or "my back is killing me and my doctor told me not to do anything except sit and watch but...." I'll admit I've done it and I'm sure a ton of us have. I think last week my doctor made me realize the consequences it will have on me when I'm older if I don't let it heal correctly now.

I've been that kid too :( but never anymore.

My mom was a dancer from like 3 years old until college and she said her back was always hurting. She was told to take a semester off, but she was a dance major so of course she didn't, just like none of us probably would in her shoes.

Flash forward to now and her back pain is crippling. She can't dance or ride horses anymore, and she hurts if she sits for too long or stands for too long.
They won't do surgery either because it would be too likely shed be paralyzed.

The worst part is that the back injuries weren't even that bad, they just kept piling up and she kept pushing through. She said she liked feeling like she was a fighter, but now she regrets it.

She gets shot in her back once a week and is on crazy pain pills and has a back masseur thats cones every werk, but I don't even know if non-doctors could get all the stuff she does, so god only knows what normal people do.
