High School Stinky Mats

Any tips or tricks to making cheer mats smell better? Vacuuming helps a little but is a bandaid fix. Can I sprinkle carpet powder on them or use Febreeze? I’ve heard some coaches use upholstery vacuums but with school about to start I don’t want to leave our mats out to be messed with by students.
